Lately many flower lovers have started repotting, and after repotting there is one very important small step that cannot be ignored - root trimming! Root trimming is especially important for succulents, clivia (Kaffir lily), and orchids. Today, Huahua will take succulents as an example to explain in detail how to trim roots!

Why trim roots?

1. Reduce pest and disease infection

After a plant has been grown for some time, its roots more or less have problems - rotten roots, decayed roots, dried roots, old roots. After trimming, the chance of the plant being infected by pests and diseases is greatly reduced.

2. If old roots are not removed, new roots will not grow

Old roots grow slowly and waste nutrients; after the fine capillary roots that absorb water dry up, they also inhibit the growth of new roots, so roots must be trimmed. The wounds caused by trimming also stimulate the plant and speed up rooting.

In which situations do roots need trimming?

1、

Bare-root succulents bought online need root trimming

Succulents and cactus balls bought online may carry insect eggs, mold, and other diseases stuck to the roots or leaves. If planted directly, they easily infect other plants at home, so the roots must be trimmed. But woody and herbaceous flowers do not need root trimming.

2. Roots need trimming when repotting and transplanting

When repotting, if you find dried or rotten roots on the plant, you need to trim the roots so as not to affect subsequent growth.

How to trim roots correctly

?

1. Stop watering and remove from the pot

Before trimming roots, stop watering for 7 days. When the soil is almost dry, dig out the whole plant together with the soil, and carefully clean off the soil.

2. Trim the roots

Keep the strong main roots and well-growing new roots. The following roots can all be trimmed as appropriate. While trimming roots, you can also clean off the dried leaves.

Dried roots

Rotten roots

White capillary roots

Reverse-growing roots

Overlong roots

3. Wash the roots

After trimming, soak the roots in a carbendazim solution diluted 1000 times for 20 minutes to sterilize and disinfect.

4. Dry the roots

Place the trimmed plant in a ventilated spot with indirect light to dry for 1~2 days to speed up wound healing and prevent black rot during cuttings or transplanting.

5. Pot up in moist soil

Choose loose, breathable nutrient soil and spray it moist. Replant the dried plant into the pot. At this time it is in the root-establishing period, so avoid direct light, and water again 3~5 days after transplanting.

That is all Huahua has to share about root trimming

Flower lovers, have you all learned it?
