There are actually a lot of gardeners growing roses, but few can grow them to perfection. Put plainly, it still comes down to your day-to-day care falling short. Today Duoduo will explain in detail how to care for roses in autumn~

How to water roses

Watering is the first question every gardener asks. Generally speaking, roses should be watered by the "dry-wet" rule: water when dry, let dry between waterings.

In autumn, potted roses generally need watering once every 3~5 days; roses planted in the ground outdoors may not need watering at all, just give them a drink when the weather is very dry.

How to provide ventilation for roses

The most important thing in growing roses is ventilation. You could say your home's airflow directly determines whether your roses can be grown well.

If grown outdoors, ventilation is certainly not a problem.

If grown indoors, an open-air balcony is best; if you don't have one, it's best to grow them on a balcony with open north-south airflow, and open the windows often for ventilation.

How to fertilize roses

1. Fertilizing during the growing season

September-October is the period of vigorous growth for roses; generally fertilize once a week, using either a compound fertilizer or your own composted organic fertilizer.

Before the roses bloom, apply a phosphorus-potassium top dressing; you can use monopotassium phosphate at a ratio of 1:1000, spraying 2~3 times is about enough. You can also drench the roots directly.

2. Fertilizing in summer

In July-August, roses are in a semi-dormant state and must not be fertilized.

3. Fertilizing in winter

Stop fertilizing in late autumn, mainly to avoid the branches sprouting again and being unable to survive the winter.

In winter you can apply one heavy feeding, such as cake fertilizer, slow-release fertilizer, rotted animal manure, etc., and then do not fertilize again for the whole winter.

How to prune roses

1. Remove spent flowers

Just cut them off at the place where Duoduo has drawn the red line.

2. Cut off leggy branches

For these badly leggy ones, you can cut off half directly; if you can be ruthless enough, you can also cut off two-thirds~

3. Cut off surplus flower buds

Right now is when roses bloom; flower bud differentiation produces many buds, and too many buds cause a loss of nutrients, so just keep the single top bud~

4. Heavy pruning during the winter dormant period

When winter comes, give the roses a heavy pruning, that is, cut off all the above-ground parts.

How to give roses sunlight

Roses grown at home must be placed on a south-facing balcony with good light. Only with sufficient light can roses bloom more.

What to do about rose powdery mildew

1. Cut off all the branches and leaves of the rose affected by powdery mildew.

2. Strengthen indoor ventilation; growing them outdoors is best if possible.

3. Alternately spray fungicides such as thiophanate-methyl, potassium permanganate, and carbendazim. When spraying, be careful to make sure both the leaf surface and the leaf underside are thoroughly soaked with the powder covered.

What to do if roses get red spider mites

1. If your area gets a lot of rain, you can move the roses out to get rained on; basically after a few rainings the red spider mites are gone, because red spider mites like hot, dry environments.

2. Use medication. Alternate Jinmanzhi and Aikaman, spraying once every 3 days; when spraying, make sure both the front and back of the leaves are soaked with the solution. After about 3~4 times, the red spider mites can be wiped out.

What to do if roses get root rot

1. First repot the rose and clean the root system thoroughly.

2. Cut off all the rotted roots, then soak them in a carbendazim solution. Do not exceed half an hour, then take them out and dry them in the shade.

3. Prepare clean nutrient soil and repot~

What to do if rose leaves turn yellow

1. Watering problems

If you haven't watered for a long time, then it means a lack of water; water the rose thoroughly, then pick off the yellowed leaves.

If you've been watering a lot recently, it may be waterlogged root rot; for what to do specifically, please refer to the "what to do about root rot" section in this article.

2. Too much fertilizer

If you fertilized recently, it may be too much fertilizer burning the roots. Quickly water the rose to let the excess fertilizer dissolve into the water and flow out with it; water 1~2 times in a row, then place the rose in a well-ventilated spot to grow~

3. Pests and diseases

Powdery mildew and red spider mites are the most common pests and diseases of roses; for how to handle them specifically, see the powdery mildew and red spider mite sections in this article.

What to do if roses don't bloom

Generally, the main reasons roses don't bloom are insufficient fertilizer and failure to prune in time

Actually, roses aren't that hard to keep alive,

If planted in the ground,

even if you do nothing at all,

when the time comes, the roses will still bloom for you~
