Recently fellow gardeners have reported that the celtuce they grow on their own balconies has leaves that are getting sparser and sparser, and they don't know why! In fact, celtuce can be said to be a seasonal vegetable; you can see celtuce in the market almost all year round, and this is because celtuce has extremely strong adaptability to its growing environment. So what problems should we pay attention to when planting it?

Planting methods:

Soil:

Celtuce does not have high or particularly strict requirements for soil, but it does have relatively high requirements for soil fertility. It is best to apply some farmyard manure, combined with compound fertilizers such as urea, diammonium phosphate and potassium sulfate, and that will be enough!

Sowing:

It is best to sow after rain, as the soil will be more moist and the seeds will sprout faster after sowing. Or you can water it yourself, then scatter the celtuce seeds in, cover with a layer of soil, put a layer of plastic wrap on top, and poke a few holes in the plastic wrap. This can ensure the temperature for the seedlings when they sprout. Wait until about 80% of the seedlings have sprouted, then tear off the plastic wrap!

Transplanting:

When celtuce has sprouted for 5-6 days, you need to start transplanting. It is best to space plants 20 cm apart, and rows 15 cm apart. Transplanting celtuce at this spacing will give a relatively high yield, and at the same time can prevent diseases caused by dense planting!

Water:

The growth of celtuce cannot be separated from its dependence on water and nutrients, and it has a very large demand for water. Generally, from the early growth stage to full growth, it needs to be fertilized 3 times. The first time: when celtuce has 5-6 leaves. The second time: when celtuce has grown to 20 cm. The third time: when it is about to be harvested, apply fertilizer once to speed up growth!

Pest prevention:

The most common disease of celtuce is downy mildew. When pests are found, promptly use Previcur or metalaxyl mancozeb wettable powder for control. If it is a small area, you can just pick off the pests by hand!

Harvesting:

If you are growing it for yourself to eat, you can harvest early, because the leaves picked are very tender, or wait until the leaves have grown to 15-20 leaves before harvesting. At this time the harvested leaves are relatively mature; if you wait any later, the leaves will easily become old!
