Summary: A summary of the best wheat planting times across regions

The autumn harvest season is about to begin, and once the corn is harvested, it will soon be time to sow. The question of when to sow wheat is probably what farmers are most concerned about lately. But this question is easy to answer in some ways and complicated in others. Here, Science Xingnong will talk about this issue.

First, let's look at China's wheat-growing regions:

China's current wheat-growing regions include the Northeast Spring Wheat Region, the Northern Spring Wheat Region, the Northwest Spring Wheat Region, the Northern Winter Wheat Region, the Huang-Huai Winter Wheat Region, the Middle and Lower Yangtze Winter Wheat Region, and the Southwest Winter Wheat Region, among several major wheat-growing areas.

First, let's look at the situation in each wheat-growing region.

Northern Spring Wheat Region: The areas covered by the Northern Spring Wheat Region mainly include parts of Inner Mongolia, Hebei, and Shaanxi. Due to the influence of climate and soil conditions in these areas, the wheat yield per unit area in this wheat-growing region is relatively low. It is suitable for growing spring wheat, generally one crop per year, usually planted from March to April each year. The wheat needs three to four months to grow.

Northeast Spring Wheat Region: The Northeast Spring Wheat Region mainly includes the three northeastern provinces and parts of Inner Mongolia. Because the planting area is relatively large and the yield is relatively high, this is the main wheat-producing area. Planting generally begins around April 10; the wheat is one crop per year, and the growing period requires more than three months.

Northwest Spring Wheat Region: This wheat-growing region is mainly in Gansu and Ningxia. The wheat in this region takes a relatively long time to grow, generally requiring more than four months to mature, and planting usually begins in March each year.

Huang-Huai Winter Wheat Region: This wheat-growing region covers a relatively wide area, mainly including Henan and Shandong, as well as parts of Jiangsu, Anhui, and Shaanxi. Because this region includes many areas, the wheat cropping systems vary a lot: there are areas with two crops per year, as well as areas with one crop per year and three crops in two years. Because it belongs to a winter wheat region, the wheat planted is generally winter type or weak winter type, and it generally takes about 7 to 8 months to mature. The sowing period generally begins in early October after the autumn harvest each year.

Middle and Lower Yangtze Winter Wheat Region: This region mainly includes Anhui, Jiangsu, and Hunan. Because the light and heat conditions are relatively good, the wheat yield per unit area is relatively high. The wheat growing period is generally about seven months, and the most suitable planting time is from the end of October to before November 20 each year.

Southwest Winter Wheat Region: This wheat-growing region mainly includes some cities in the southwest region, including Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou. The wheat growing time is generally more than 6 months but less than 7 months. This growing time is relatively short among winter wheat-growing regions, and the planting time is generally from the end of October to early November each year.
