Inflammation of the throat caused by deficiency fire flaring upward has two patterns and must be treated according to the pattern

In traditional Chinese medicine, deficiency fire flaring upward refers to the signs of deficiency fire rising caused by long-standing illness, loss of yin qi and relatively excessive yang qi, manifesting as sore throat and red eyes, mouth and tongue sores, dizziness and blurred vision, restlessness and insomnia, tinnitus and forgetfulness, heat in the palms and soles, a tender red tongue, and a thin, rapid or wiry pulse. In daily life, people also habitually say they have "internal heat," with mouth and tongue sores, sore and swollen throat, toothache and so on, generally caused by an irregular lifestyle and excessive yang qi in the heart, spleen and stomach or liver and other viscera.
An irregular lifestyle causes excessive or overabundant yang qi in the viscera, without any yin deficiency; this is in fact excess fire, so for people who are not afflicted by illness, "internal heat" can usually be managed on its own with medicines that clear excess fire, such as Huanglian Shangqing Wan. However, for people in a subhealthy state, with chronic diseases, or with a constitution that is weak to begin with, if sore throat, mouth and tongue sores, and mental restlessness appear, it is not pure excess fire, but at least a mixture of deficiency and excess, or deficiency of yin with hyperactive fire.
Specifically, the symptoms need to be considered together with the tongue and pulse findings and the other four diagnostic methods; that is, people who are not in robust health should not clear fire on their own when "internal heat" appears, otherwise it easily damages yin and makes the deficiency fire flare up even more, and may even cause more substantive pathological changes. In daily life there are often quite a few people who know they have yin deficiency and clear fire on their own; although there may be temporary relief, in fact hidden dangers and the root of trouble have been planted.
In excess-fire throat inflammation and sore, swollen throat, the "excess" signs are relatively obvious: thirst with a desire to drink, especially a wish to drink cold water, as well as bad breath and constipation, dark yellow urine, a tendency to develop acne, easy sweating, a hot temper, red and swollen eyes, swollen and painful gums, and so on. If it is "internal heat" from deficiency of yin with hyperactive fire, there is a dry mouth and thirst, but drinking water does not quench the thirst, and there may even be hotness and irritability in the palms, soles and center of the chest, known as five-center heat, insomnia and restlessness, and afternoon tidal fever, and so on. Therefore, people with deficiency of yin and hyperactive fire should seek medical treatment promptly.
