The Complete Guide to Home Gardening

Teacher Xiao Ye teaches you all kinds of gardening knowledge!

It's autumn, and many flower lovers have sent in messages asking how to care for their plants at home this season. When it comes to watering, they're not sure how much to water, how to water, or what kind of water is good for the plants. Today Teacher Xiao Ye will tell you how to DIY these 3 kinds of nutrient water at home, so your plants will never suffer root rot or yellow leaves again after drinking them!

Feed flowers with soybean fertilizer, and roots and stems grow strong and plump!

For soybeans, it's best to use moldy, shriveled ones as fertilizer; keep the ones that aren't spoiled for yourself to eat, so nothing goes to waste.

Wash the soybeans and put them in water to boil. Scoop out the boiled soybeans and mash them into a soybean paste with a small wooden stick; this speeds up decomposition. Put the soybean paste into an airtight container, add water until it's 80% full, and screw the lid on (best not to tighten it all the way, leave a small gap). Place it in the sun, and in about half a month it will be fully decomposed!

Dilute the fully decomposed soybean fertilizer with 10 times its volume of clean water and it's ready for watering flowers; just water once a week. Soybeans are rich in nitrogen fertilizer, making them an excellent fertilizer for flowers like clivia (Clivia miniata) and spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum).

Water flowers with rice water, and the petals become fragrant, big and plump

Rice water has very high nutritional value, and it's economical and practical - you can give your flowers fertilizer without spending a single cent. Pour the water left over from washing rice into an empty bottle. When screwing on the cap, it's best to leave a small gap so it decomposes quickly. Place the prepared rice water in the sun, and in about half a month it will be fully decomposed. If you find the decomposition smells bad, you can put in a piece of orange peel, and the smell won't be so foul!

Dilute the fully decomposed rice water with 100 times its volume of clean water. Since rice water is acidic, you can use it to water jasmine (Jasminum sambac), gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) and orchids, guaranteeing that after drinking it the flowers' petals will be big and plump!

Waste oil from the range hood: big leaves, glossy and shiny

Usually people just throw away the waste oil from the range hood, but actually this waste oil can be used to water flowers. It's rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, making it a very good nutrient for spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum), rubber plants (Ficus elastica), pothos (Epipremnum aureum) and kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana). We just need to dig a hole in the flower pot at a spot far from the roots and add a spoonful of range hood waste oil.

One spoonful of range hood oil can replace half a year's worth of fertilizer - absolutely filling. If you're worried that the waste oil will weaken the soil's air permeability, you can apply some microbial inoculant. Microbial inoculant is rich in a large amount of beneficial bacteria, which can improve the soil and prevent root burn and root rot! The leaves will absolutely shine with a green glow!

That's all for Teacher Xiao Ye's explanation today.
