I really love a phrase in Cantonese:"Get some tea when you're free"。
Life can be lived a little slower, and slower still - drink a cup of tea, and let your mind go blank.
Spend an afternoon so long it seems to have no meaning at all.
An afternoon spent with succulents makes the whole world feel lighter.
At times like this, maybe you could go learn something you have always wanted to learn but never got around to.
For example: flower arranging, painting, or learning a bit of cooking is nice too - let's enrich ourselves.
Like me, on weekends I usually tidy up my succulent things: in summer, I clear out the empty pots, even though it stings a little.
Let me share a little tip with everyone:
Don't throw away the leftover waste soil in empty succulent pots - it can be used to grow flowers. But it contains pathogens that we need to clean out.
- Reusing waste soil -
1. Soak it in disinfectant, then leave it in the sun for one or two days until dry; a microwave works too.
2. Then sift it; if you use it for sowing you need to disinfect it twice more, but for growing other things there is no big problem.
3. Used directly it tends to compact, so it is best to mix in some peat, grit or slow-release fertiliser.
Top recommendation for disinfectant:Potassium permanganateand the like; there are also dedicated disinfectant tablets, just drop them in water.
Why do this? Because:
1. Gritty soil is a non-renewable resource, so reusing it is very eco-friendly.
2. It saves money - reusing it with some gritty fertiliser and peat mixed in is much cheaper than using brand-new soil. The money saved can go towards buying more succulents - a nice virtuous cycle.
After all, nobody's money blows in on the wind~
Why go to all this trouble to grow succulents?
The joy succulents bring is truly remarkable! Coming home exhausted from work, looking at the little succulents still makes you happy.
Apart from empty pots, nothing else can hurt me in summer!
The heart slowly grows stronger through this process too; people, after all, are tempered through hard-won, tearful experience.
Succulents always make us love life more; while caring for them, you can perhaps feel the power nature gives us.
After 50 million years of evolution, returning to nature always lifts the spirits.
Put down the phone and the internet, leaving only the cicadas and a gentle breeze, thinking of nothing, invite a few friends over, and get some tea when you're free.
Admiring succulents and looking at flowers - this is the joy of life!
Maybe this is also why so many succulent fans fall down the rabbit hole; succulents change in so many ways and always bring us ever more novel experiences.
Of course, we don't want that terrifying death experience, all right, dear succulents.
Grow an old stem, and before you know it, the days have passed~
The beauty of succulents needs time to settle. So too do human wisdom and beauty.
Yeats wrote it like this:
When you are old and grey and full of sleep
And nodding by the fire, take down this book
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep
How many loved your moments of glad grace
And loved your beauty with love false or true
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you
And loved the sorrows of your changing face
And bending down beside the glowing bars
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars
So let us, together with our succulents, idle away this time~
