The last couple of days Lanyao talked about the method for potting tree peonies; today we will talk about the method for planting tree peonies in the ground.

Treatment of tree peony seedlings

In the method for planting tree peony seedlings in the ground, treating the root system is still a key task.

If there are mold spots on the roots, first rinse them clean, then prune off the rotten roots, the blackened roots, and the overly long roots, then soak them in a thiophanate-methyl solution to sterilize and disinfect.

After soaking, you can then soak them once more in rooting powder water, which is even more beneficial for the growth of new roots.

Then mix thiophanate-methyl with fine soil, and evenly coat it onto the roots of the tree peony, and plant afterward; this can prevent pathogens from invading.

Planting method

Before planting, the ground should first be formed into ridges. Tree peonies like dry conditions and dislike dampness, so low-lying land is not suitable for planting. Forming ridges first helps with good drainage, and second can provide the tree peony with a deep soil layer for growth.

After digging the planting hole, first test the depth; once the depth is suitable, loosen the soil below, then mix in fermented organic fertilizer, then cover with plain soil, then place the tree peony seedling in and fill with soil.

During the soil-filling process, note that the tree peony roots should be spread out as much as possible, not squeezed together, and not coiled inside.

Finally, press the soil firm. Tree peonies planted in the ground do not need watering. After planting, you can cover the ground with dry grass, which helps prevent excessive evaporation of water and provides warmth in winter.

Topdressing

For tree peonies planted in the ground, when they sprout in spring, you can shallowly bury fermented organic fertilizer around the plant to supplement fertility.
