One trick wipes out root rot in water-grown plants completely, and the leaves turn so green they could drip oil!
How to tell whether a water-grown plant has root rot
1. Gently pull the roots at the base
Huahua usually first checks whether the roots have turned black or yellow, then feels with the hand whether they have gone soft. If a gentle pull at the base of the roots shows the outer skin comes off easily, that means root rot has already set in.
2. Use your nose
Using your nose mainly means smelling the plant roots and the water. If there is some foul odor, that means root rot has already set in.
Causes of root rot
1. Low dissolved oxygen content in the nutrient solution
There are many causes of root rot in water-grown plants, and the most common cause is still a problem with the nutrient solution. For example, in the summer that has just passed, once the weather gets hot the dissolved oxygen content in the water-growing bottle drops, which may cause the plant roots to lack oxygen.
Solution: put the water-growing bottle in a ventilated place at home.
2. Poor water quality of the nutrient solution
If there are substances in the nutrient solution, it may be because the water quality contains leftover plant fragments and residual substrate, which can also cause the nutrient solution to spoil.
Solution: change the water every 2 to 3 days, and check the water quality of the nutrient solution.
3. The nutrient solution has submerged the plant roots
If the nutrient solution submerges all of the plant's roots or even the root crown, root rot can also occur.
Solution: leave half of the plant's roots exposed to oxygen and half in the nutrient solution.
4. High temperature of the nutrient solution
When the temperature of the nutrient solution exceeds 30 degrees, the roots are prone to rotting.
Solution: provide the plant with appropriate shade.
How to deal with root rot
1. Cut off the rotten roots in time
After discovering root rot, take the plant out and rinse the root slime under clean water; do not rub it with your hands. Then cut off the rotten roots and let them dry in a ventilated place.
2. Change the water in the water-growing bottle
We need to wash the water-growing bottle clean and replace it with new water. If you use tap water from home, ventilate the water one day in advance before changing it to remove the chlorine. Wait until new roots grow before using nutrient solution (or you can skip it).
Notes
1. Temperature
The water temperature for water growing should be 18 degrees to below 25 as much as possible, and plant lovers should pay attention to placing the plant in a cool, ventilated place.
2. Oxygen
The nutrient solution needs sufficient oxygen; you can appropriately put some metronidazole, vitamin B12 and small pieces of charcoal in the water to prevent rot and improve the water quality of the nutrient solution.
