Gardenia is very cold-hardy. With just a little care, it overwinters easily and may even keep its leaves. The most suitable growing temperature for gardenia is 18°C-25°C, and in winter it can withstand low temperatures of minus five degrees. However, if the temperature drops any lower, the leaves will be damaged by frost, drop off and enter dormancy, though its roots generally will not freeze to death and can continue to grow the following year.

Select healthy branches, make a cut of 3 cm at the part where you will do the ring-barking, wrap the barked part with sphagnum moss, secure it with plastic film, and tie string at both ends. Transplant it together with the root ball, and the root system will grow quite well.

Gardenia likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight. Even in winter, gardenia should be given sunlight, but the light should not be too intense; three to four hours of sunlight a day is enough. Although gardenia stops growing, moderate light in winter can encourage the plant to bloom the following year.

Do not water too often either, because when temperatures are low, overwatering easily frost-damages the plant. So generally, depending on the humidity in your home, water only when you see the soil in the pot has dried out, roughly once every half a month to a month. Likewise, when overwintering, sunlight should not be too intense; generally place it somewhere at home where it can get sunlight but is not in direct sun, to prevent diseases in the flowers caused by sunlight.

Gardenia leaves stay green all year round, the flowers are beautiful, fragrant and elegantly understated; green leaves and white flowers make it especially fresh and lovely. It is suitable for planting in front of steps, beside ponds and along roadsides, and can also be used as a flowering hedge or grown in pots for ornament. The flowers can also be used in flower arrangements and worn as decoration. This understated flower even has a beautiful legend.

Its flower language is "eternal love, a lifetime of waiting and joy." Gardenia has thus won people's affection. However, the gardenias currently grown in this region do not bloom early enough, do not bloom long enough, and do not set enough seed.
