What are the meanings and symbolic significance of the clivia?

I. Meanings

The meanings of the clivia are related to its appearance. Its leaves are smooth, thick and upright like swords, which represents a character of fortitude and strength, unyielding in the face of power; when it blooms, its brilliant colors and full blossoms also carry the meaning of happiness and completeness, wealth and good fortune.

II. Legend

There is a very poignant legend about the clivia. It is said that a prince fell in love with a girl from an ordinary family, but a princess fell in love with the prince. When the princess learned that the prince was secretly watching that girl, she was very angry and jealous, so she secretly informed the king, and in his anger the king put the girl to death. When the prince learned of this, he hated the princess even more. The princess grew haggard day by day, and in the end could not move. Gazing at the prince's receding figure, her body turned into soil, and her clothes turned into branches and leaves, becoming a clivia. She forever faces the direction of the prince, loving him forever, unchanging until death. So it has another meaning as well: devotion in love.
