How to prune dahlias? Detailed pruning methods and techniques
1. Pruning branches
Promptly prune away dead and diseased branches, and during the growing season you can cut off some thin, weak branches so they do not consume excess nutrients that cannot be supplied to the other sturdy branches; cutting them off can encourage new branches to sprout.
2. Pruning flowers
Because dahlias have a relatively long flowering period, and with proper care their flowers bloom almost without interruption, you should promptly prune and remove spent flowers so as not to waste nutrients and affect the opening of new flowers. If you want the flowers to bloom more vividly, you can keep the top bud and two side buds and cut off the lower buds, which helps direct all the nutrients to the upper buds, making the flowers bloom larger and more vividly.
3. Pruning leaves
If yellow leaves appear or leaves have been affected by pests and diseases, prune them promptly, otherwise infection is very likely to occur.
