As the weather starts to heat up, helping plants get through the summer is an essential process for flower lovers. In this article, we will talk about how to manage azaleas in summer. The heat tolerance of azaleas is greatly related to the variety and the growth vigor of the plant, so we say they can be treated differently.

Light

Azaleas are shade-loving plants, and direct sunlight is unfavorable to their growth. It is best to plant them in a place shaded by tree shadows.

Soil

They prefer well-drained acidic soil, loose, fertile, and rich in humus. Acidic sandy loam is suitable, and waterlogging should be avoided.

Watering

In the hot summer, water at least once a day, but absolutely avoid waterlogging. For daily watering, never use alkaline water. When watering, also note that the water temperature should not be too cold, especially in the hot summer. Using too-cold water to water thoroughly causes the soil temperature to drop suddenly, affecting root water uptake and disrupting the plant's physiological balance. Reduce watering in autumn, and after bringing the plant indoors in winter, water only when the potting soil has dried out completely.

Fertilizing

Generally, in late winter and early spring each year, apply some organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer. After azaleas bloom in April-May, since the plant consumes a large amount of nutrients during the flowering period, as the leaf buds sprout and new shoots grow, a topdressing can be applied about every 15 days. After the start of the dog days, most of the shoots have stopped growing. This is the high-temperature season, and physiological activity weakens, so topdressing can be stopped. After autumn, the climate gradually becomes cooler, and there are often lingering autumn rains. The temperature and humidity are suitable for azalea growth, so the last topdressing can be applied at this time. After winter begins, fertilizing is generally not advisable.

Pruning

Pruning branches is generally done in spring and autumn. Cut off crossing branches, overly dense branches, overlapping branches, and diseased or weak branches, and promptly remove spent flowers to increase ventilation and light penetration, which also benefits plant growth. As for shaping, do it according to your own preferences.
