Peking University Professor Warns Middle-Aged and Elderly People: Don't Die of Ignorance - See How Many Things You're Doing Wrong

Speaker:
Qi Boli (Director of Internal Medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Peking University Health Science Center)I only came back from the United States last year; before that I stayed at Stanford for six years. Today I want to introduce many new things to everyone.
The general survey work in Beijing has ended. Beijing took two championships: one is the high blood pressure championship, and one is the high blood lipids championship. Very regrettable.
There is a document that has been issued, requiring all units to listen to more of the latest health care knowledge. I came precisely for this purpose.
Now, the highest mortality rate is among people aged 30 to 50. Age is not a treasure; high blood lipids are very dangerous.
Everyone knows there is an international standard: a lifespan equal to 5 to 7 times the maturity period is considered longevity. By this calculation, the human lifespan should be 100 to 175 years.
Why has no one reached it? The main reason is not paying attention to health care. This problem is very serious in China.
Now the vast majority die of illness, and very few die of old age. This extremely abnormal phenomenon requires us to correct it as soon as possible.
Recently the United Nations praised our neighboring country Japan, because its lifespan is the world champion.
Their women's average lifespan is 87.6 years. Our country's was 35 years in the 1950s, 57 years in the 1960s, and now it is 67.88 years, a full 20 years behind Japan. This is unforgivable.
Japan's advanced experience is to use the community as a unit and give a health care class once every month. If someone did not come to listen, they must make it up.
Our country does not have this system. Whoever wants to listen can listen; if they don't listen, forget it. I worked in a hospital for 40 years, and the vast majority of people who die of illness suffer greatly.
My purpose in coming is very clear. I am entrusted by science and instructed by the Ministry of Health, hoping that everyone will pay attention to health care work.
The United Nations put forward a slogan: "Never die of ignorance."
The average age of our intellectuals is 58.5 years. According to this number, I think not counting preschool education, 6 years of primary school, 6 years of middle school, 8 years of medical university, 3 years of master's study, 3 years of doctoral study, and 3 years of postdoctoral study, after finishing all of it, the time is up and there is simply nothing one can do. Many scientists did not exceed this age.
Everyone knows how to do health care, right? I think the most important thing is a balanced diet.
Balanced Diet
So-called balanced diet has two major categories: drinks and foods.
First, let's talk about the first issue of diet, the issue of "drinks."
Everyone should know what health care products are: they must be able to treat diseases. Up to now, the vast majority of us Chinese still do not know what health care products are.
At an international conference, 6 kinds of health care products were designated:
First, green tea;
Second, red wine;
Third, soy milk;
Fourth, yogurt (not milk, pay attention);
Fifth, bone soup;
Sixth, mushroom soup.
Why mention mushroom soup? Because mushrooms can improve immune function.
What about bone soup? Bone soup contains collagen, and collagen prolongs life. That is why now countries around the world have bone soup streets, while China has very few.
Why mention yogurt? Because yogurt maintains bacterial balance.
So-called maintaining bacterial balance means beneficial bacteria grow and harmful bacteria are eliminated, so eating yogurt can reduce illness.
We find it very strange that China's yogurt sales are very low, while milk sales are very large. We do not deny the role of milk itself, but compared with yogurt it is far inferior.
Why drink green tea? Green tea contains tea polyphenols, and tea polyphenols are anti-cancer. Among all beverages, green tea is first.
Some people also drink jasmine tea. I asked them why they drink jasmine tea. Their answer was very simple: "It smells good."
I said if you drink it for the fragrance, I suggest you drink sesame oil. We do not drink it for fragrance, but for fear of cancer. Jasmine tea has no health care effect at all; it is only fragrant.
Japan's general survey was done especially well. After their survey, they said that among people over 40 years old, there was not one person without cancer cells in their body.
Why some people get cancer and some do not is related to drinking green tea.
If you drink 4 cups of green tea every day, cancer cells will not divide, and even if they divide, it will be delayed by more than 9 years. Therefore, in Japan, elementary school students drink a cup of green tea every day as soon as they go to school.
Second, please note that green tea contains fluoride.
What effect does this fluoride have? It was known very early in ancient times. When Cao Xueqin wrote Dream of the Red Chamber, he said that the people in the Jia household rinsed their mouths with tea after meals. Su Dongpo also recorded that every time he finished eating, he rinsed his mouth with middle- and lower-grade tea, in order to strengthen his teeth.
Japanese people have now figured it out: it can not only strengthen teeth, but also eliminate cavities and eliminate plaque. Three minutes after a meal, dental plaque begins to appear.
Now many of us have bad teeth, and we not only do not rinse our mouths with tea, we do not even rinse with plain water.
In hospitals, the dental department is the busiest, and within the dental department, the denture room is the busiest. Think about it: if your teeth are good, of course you will live longer.
Many of us ignore this. Actually, it is no trouble: you rinse your mouth with tea and eliminate plaque, and also strengthen your teeth.
When you reach old age, your teeth will be strong and you will not get cavities. This is a very small thing, and you should persist in doing it.
Third, green tea itself contains theanine.
Theanine improves blood vessel toughness, making blood vessels less likely to rupture.
Many people come to Beijing for treatment of cerebrovascular accidents. In the hospital, out of every 4 deaths, 1 is from cerebral hemorrhage. This is very dangerous. Cerebral hemorrhage cannot be treated; the fear is getting angry. Once you get angry, slap the table, and glare, the cerebral blood vessels burst.
I have changed now; I started drinking green tea long ago. Why? I am afraid my son will make me angry. Everyone, at your age, start drinking it early. Then when the time comes, you can slap the table a few times and glare a few times without fear.
The second beverage is red wine.
Europeans, men and women, old and young, drink a little red wine every day. What is the reason?
It turns out that the skin of red grapes contains something called "resveratrol." It is anti-aging; when people hear anti-aging, they love to drink it. It is also an antioxidant. People who often drink red wine do not get heart disease.
Second, it can help prevent sudden cardiac arrest, which we call sudden stop.
Everyone knows under what circumstances the heart can stop: first, if there was already heart disease; second, if there is high blood pressure; third, it is related to food.
A few days ago I went to Normal University for a consultation. A 35-year-old postdoctoral researcher was still lively in the morning and was gone by noon. Why? Blood lipids were too high.
Now I will tell everyone the results of Beijing's general survey: among in-service cadres, 1 out of every 2 people has high blood lipids, one-half. Where is the danger of high blood lipids? The heart can suddenly stop.
There was a 20-year-old young man whose drawn blood was muddy, which is very dangerous.
We asked him, and he said he ate too well. It was not that you ate too well, but that you ate too unreasonably.
We had a case: a person bought a large rice cake on the street. It was hard, sticky, and hot. He ran home, and as soon as he entered the door he told the old lady to eat it quickly so it would not get cold. After just a few bites, the old lady passed away.
Now the international community repeatedly emphasizes that too large, too hard, too sticky, and too hot can make the heart stop.
Red wine also has the effect of lowering blood pressure and lowering blood lipids.
Many people ask, isn't alcohol not allowed?
The World Health Organization says "quit smoking and limit alcohol." It did not say alcohol is not allowed, and it also stated the alcohol limits: red wine no more than 300 milliliters per day, liquor no more than 5 to 10 milliliters per day, and beer no more than 300 milliliters per day. If you exceed this amount, it is wrong; if you do not exceed this amount, it is good.
Some female comrades ask: what if I cannot drink alcohol? If you cannot drink alcohol, can you not eat grapes? When eating grapes, can you not avoid spitting out the grape skin? But I tell you, white grapes have no resveratrol, so you ate them for nothing.
So those with money drink red wine, and those without money eat grapes without spitting out the grape skin, and the health care effect is the same.
Some people still argue with me: what if I have no money?
I tell everyone, the international conference has already finished its investigation: the longevity areas of the world are all in places without money. The first is Hunza in Pakistan, the second is Azerbaijan, and there is also Cali in Ecuador. These are all places without money.
Isn't it strange? Those with money soak in banquets every day, with chicken, duck, fish, and meat, thick above and below, with general's bellies. I investigated, and very few of these people live past 65 years old.
Regarding morning exercise, many people in China are unclear.
Morning exercise is very dangerous. When you get up in the morning, the body's biological clock pattern is high body temperature, high blood pressure, and adrenaline is 4 times higher than at night. If you exercise intensely, it is very easy for something to happen, and sudden cardiac arrest is likely.
Some organizations take old men and old women to climb Fragrant Hills, and they go early in the morning, up to Ghost Fear Peak, saying: "Whoever climbs fast will live long."
I do not know whose idea this was, and I still cannot figure it out. Never organize this kind of activity; it is the biggest taboo in medicine.
We do not oppose morning walks, gymnastics, tai chi, or qigong practice, but if middle-aged and elderly people do intense morning exercise, go long-distance running, or climb Fragrant Hills, there are a hundred harms and no benefits, and the mortality rate is very high.
If you do not run long distance, you may not die; if you do not climb mountains, you may not die. This is called dying of ignorance, and the result is that you harm yourself.
The human body needs weak alkalinity. What is weak alkalinity? Vegetables and fruits.
We know that the most powerful were China's emperors. Not to mention distant ones, just the Qing Dynasty had 13 emperors. Tongzhi died at 19, Shunzhi at 23, Xianfeng at 31, Guangxu at 38, but Qianlong lived to 89. He was especially good at health care; among emperors he was the champion.
We checked his archives. First, he especially liked exercise. Second, he ate steamed sponge cake, with a mix of coarse and fine grains. Third, he liked traveling, and the most famous were his three trips to Jiangnan. That is why he lived to 89.
We investigated 818 monks. More than 30% of the monks were over 90 years old, and the youngest was 65. What power did the monks have? Their diet deserves our attention! That is why the United Nations says, never die of ignorance.
Now let's talk about the second issue of diet, the issue of "food."
Everyone knows that the Asian pyramid is best. What is the pyramid? Grains, beans, and vegetables.
I greatly admire McDonald's. They take more than 2 billion from us in a year. They are very good at doing business.
According to what I know, the reason people call it junk food is that it is an extreme food, and the consequence is being thick above and below, like a rolled-up bundle of luggage.
The first grain mentioned is old corn, said to be the "golden crop."
As for the origin of old corn, the American Medical Association did a general survey and found that the original Americans, the Indians, did not have a single case of high blood pressure and not a single case of arteriosclerosis.
It turned out to be because they ate old corn. Later it was found that old corn contains large amounts of lecithin, linoleic acid, cereal alcohol, and vitamin E, so high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis do not occur.
Why do many people eat lecithin now? They hope not to get arteriosclerosis.
But they do not know that old corn contains the most, and it does not cost much money. After this general survey, I corrected myself immediately. In the United States I persisted for 6 years, drinking corn porridge every day.
I am now over 70 years old, full of physical strength, full of energy, with a loud voice and abundant breath, and no wrinkles on my face. What is the reason? Drinking corn porridge. Believe it or not.
You drink your milk, I drink my corn porridge, and let's see who lives longer.
The second "grain" is buckwheat.
Why mention buckwheat? Now people all have the "three highs," namely high blood pressure, high blood lipids, and high blood sugar. Buckwheat is the "three lowers": it lowers blood pressure, lowers blood lipids, and lowers blood sugar.
Buckwheat contains 18% fiber. People who eat buckwheat are less likely to get gastrointestinal cancer. Among us office workers, 20% of illnesses are rectal cancer and colon cancer.
The third "grain" is tubers: white sweet potato, sweet potato, Chinese yam, and potato.
These things were proposed at international conferences. Why?
It turns out they have "three absorptions": absorbing water, absorbing fat and sugars, and absorbing toxins. Absorbing water lubricates the intestines and prevents rectal cancer and colon cancer. Absorbing fat and sugars prevents diabetes.
Absorbing toxins prevents gastrointestinal inflammation. I also investigated in the United States: Americans eat tubers by making them into various pastries, and they do not eat little of them. I hope everyone will eat more tubers and include tubers in staple foods.
Among "grains" there is also oats. If your blood pressure is high, you must eat oats: oatmeal porridge, oat flakes. They can lower blood lipids and lower blood pressure. They can lower triglycerides and bring your blood lipids down.
The last "grain" is millet!
Many people say to me: "Isn't that stuff eaten during confinement?"
In fact, the Compendium of Materia Medica already made it clear: millet can remove dampness, strengthen the spleen, calm the mind, and promote sleep. With such great benefits, you do not eat it! Now many office workers cannot sleep. I advise everyone not to take sleeping pills.
When I do health care work, they ask me to prescribe medicine. I advise them not to take Valium. I say, drink some millet porridge.
So now I have changed: in the morning a bowl of corn porridge, full of energy; in the evening a bowl of millet porridge, sleeping soundly. Isn't that great!
You must understand that food therapy is more important than drug therapy. This was said by Li Shizhen. Everything Li Shizhen wrote in the Compendium of Materia Medica is food.
Why don't we use food to solve problems, but insist on taking medicine!
Nine out of ten medicines are toxic. I have never heard that taking medicine can do health care. Qin Shi Huang did not achieve it, Han Wudi did not achieve it, and you cannot achieve it either.
But I want to state: I am not opposed to taking medicine. I am opposed to taking medicine indiscriminately. I advocate that taking medicine be "short, safe, and quick": take medicine for a short time, and take it safely.
