Camellias can be considered a flower unique to China, not only are the blooms large and brightly colored, but they also give off a distinctive fragrance, and the petals are layer upon layer. However, you also need to pay attention to method during care. Today let's hear from a camellia expert: growing camellias until the blooms are as big as a palm is actually as simple as one word, and that word is that camellias need to be grown "in shade."

Light should not be too intense

Plant growth and flowering require a fair amount of sunlight, especially for flowering plants. Only with sufficient light can photosynthesis take place, the plant's metabolism be more vigorous, and more flowers be produced. But camellias, as a plant, have a relatively low demand for light, and cannot be given direct strong light. If you are going to expose them to sun, sunlight before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. is better.

So you need to choose a suitable care environment for camellias. Usually we can choose a north balcony, or a southwest balcony, because balconies in these 2 directions receive very little direct sunlight, but good lighting conditions still let the leaves carry out photosynthesis well, which achieves the conditions for camellias to be "grown in shade." If you do not have such a balcony and are growing camellias outdoors, you need to place a shade net, which can block the sun well for camellias.

Camellias like moist, cool soil

Usually when we use soil for camellias, we relatively prefer to use the kind of pre-mixed nutrient soil, and it is best if it is soil produced and fermented in a cool place in the mountains, because this kind of soil is relatively fertile and relatively loose, while soil that has been exposed to strong sun is not only relatively dry, but also tends to clump, whereas slightly acidic soil that is relatively loose and breathable is more suitable for the growth of camellias.

Besides using moist, cool soil, we should also normally pay attention to watering camellias to keep the soil moist, because orchids relatively like moisture and cannot tolerate dryness. Generally, do not wait until the soil is completely dry before replenishing water for camellias; when the potting soil is half dry, you can water. You can use a wooden stick yourself to judge whether the potting soil is dry or wet.

Besides watering, spraying water on camellia leaves is also a good way to keep the camellia potting soil moist. At the same time, you should also spray water into the air, or place a basin of water around the camellia, so that the camellia stays in a moist state, and both growth and flowering will be better.

Finally, in order to satisfy to the greatest extent the "shade" condition that camellias like, we can use acidic organic fertilizer, purely fermented from plants, rich and balanced in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, with various organic matter, minerals and amino acids added. It can not only supplement enough nutrients for camellias, but also improve the soil environment, increase soil fertility, loosen the soil texture, and prevent compaction.

If you grow camellias at home, hurry up and try this method. Autumn and winter are exactly the good seasons for enjoying the flowers, so don't regret missing out.
