After enduring a summer of "tribulation," many people think autumn is simply the golden season for succulent growth. And in such weather, what should we do to ensure the healthy growth of succulents? Today's article is packed with practical tips for you. What are you waiting for? Hurry and grab a pen and paper to take good notes.
Catching the autumn tiger? Actually, we learned how long ago!
Let's first take a look at how the weather changes under the influence of the "autumn tiger." According to records, the autumn tiger actually refers in meteorology to weather above 35°C that returns briefly after the end of the three fu periods. It generally occurs between August and September. The weather characteristics that come with it mainly include continuously rising temperatures, abundant sunshine and dry air. This is not an ideal growing environment for succulents, but because it is fairly similar to summer, many of the methods we use to save succulents in summer can actually still come in handy at this time.
Do these three things and say goodbye to the autumn tiger!
1. Don't expose them to too much sun
Because throughout the summer we try to keep succulents from direct sunlight when caring for them, quite a few succulents develop etiolation. Precisely because of this, as soon as autumn arrives some friends hurriedly move their succulents into the sun for a good baking, hoping to properly cure this etiolation. But unexpectedly, not only was the etiolation not cured, but because of the autumn tiger the succulent leaves got sunburned instead, which is a real loss.
Actually, we do encourage growers to give succulents more sun in autumn, but the period from summer into autumn is meant for succulents to recover their growth, so there is no need to rush too much. First care for the succulents according to summer methods, then gradually give them sunlight. By taking advantage of the lower temperatures in the morning and evening, we can place the succulents in the sun during these two periods, which can effectively ease the problem.
2. Water thoroughly when watering
Besides being in a cooling state all summer, succulents also did not drink much water in summer. Therefore, when the autumn tiger first arrives, we should still put more effort into water control. Never suddenly increase the amount of water, as this may very likely prevent the shriveled roots of the succulents from absorbing so much water, leading to root rot and making all our previous efforts wasted.
You can appropriately and gradually increase the amount of watering to smoothly transition through the autumn tiger period. Of course, if the succulent roots have fully recovered their former state, then when watering you can relax a little. But still remember to water thoroughly, never water only halfway, and it is best not to splash water onto the succulent leaves, so as to avoid sunburn from sunlight affecting their beauty.
3. Ventilate frequently when there is nothing else to do
The arrival of the autumn tiger is generally accompanied by relatively high temperatures. If ventilation is not provided at this time, black rot is very likely to occur, which not only affects the beauty of the succulents but is also bad for their healthy growth. So while doing a good job of shading, we had best place the succulents on the windowsill every day for some ventilation, letting them breathe fresh air.
