Flower Arranging

Flowers are a beautiful gift that nature bestows upon humanity,

and people have kept company with flowers since early in their productive activities.

Flowers give people feelings of trust and comfort and can help them communicate with one another.

In ancient times, people

wore flowers (leaves) as talismans on their bodies,

which could drive away demons and ward off evil, bringing safety.

In China, long before the introduction of Buddhism,

there were already folk customs of using flowers in sacrifices and giving them as gifts.

In "The Book of Songs? Odes of Zheng? (Zhen and Wei)"

there are records of men and women holding orchids and going to the Zhen River and Wei River to sacrifice and play.

And even more common was for men and women

to give flowers to each other to show affection and longing.

Lu Kai of the Jin Dynasty wrote in his plum blossom poem:

"Breaking off a blossom I met a courier, to send it to a person at the Longtou,

there is nothing in Jiangnan, so I send you a branch of spring."

Placing the flowering branch given by a friend into a water-filled vessel

is a perfectly natural thing to do, and this is precisely the origin of the art of flower arranging.

Flower arranging contains many factors,

such as the size and color of the flowering branches,

the purpose of the arrangement, the spatial environment, and so on, all of which must harmonize with one another.

When only one kind of flower is chosen for an arrangement, it is easy to achieve harmony in nature.

When choosing 2 or more kinds of flowers,

one should be the main one, with the others playing a supporting and accenting role,

and there should also be a distinction between primary and secondary in the height and number of flowering branches.

Regarding the purpose of the arrangement,

festive arrangements express a warm and exuberant atmosphere,

using warm-colored flowers such as red, yellow, and orange as the main tone,

appropriately paired with white and set off by green,

so that the color contrast is strong and eye-catching.

Quiet arrangements, by contrast, use cool-colored flowers such as blue and purple as the base tone.

Group arrangement.

When arranging flowers, one should also pay attention to rhythm.

In a group arrangement, the height, straightness or curvature, and horizontal or slanting changes of the flowering branches,

the size of the flowers, their degree of openness,

and the differences in color are all rich in variation, and this is where the rhythm lies.

The Buddha said: One flower, one world; one blade of grass, one paradise.

Floral art is a spiritual practice,

refining techniques outwardly and cultivating character inwardly.
