Keeping a few pots of flowers at home purifies indoor air and nurtures your spirit, yet how to grow a pot of flowers well is a problem for many people. Master these tips and all your problems are solved~

Watering

Cotton thread long-term watering method

1

When no one is home for a long time, cotton thread watering comes in handy to keep the flowers from withering. Find a large bucket, fill it with water, arrange all the potted plants at home around the bucket, and connect the two with cotton thread. The water will flow along the thread into the flower pots.

Note that the bucket must be placed higher than the potted plants, so the effect of "water flowing downward" works. That way, even if you are away from home for a month, you need not worry about the flowers withering~

Leftover tea watering method

2

Tea contains a variety of chemical substances. Watering flowers with leftover tea adds nutrients such as nitrogen to the plants and also helps retain moisture in the soil. However, this watering method needs to be done in moderation and on a regular basis~

Watering with spoiled milk

3

After milk spoils, add water and use it to water flowers; it benefits the growth of the flowers. It is best to add more water to dilute the milk. Note that milk that has not spoiled cannot be used to water flowers, because fresh milk generates a large amount of heat during fermentation, which will scorch the roots.

Watering with rice-washing water

4

Regularly watering flowers with rice-washing water can make the plants lush with branches and leaves and the flowers brightly colored

Watering with warm water

5

When the weather is cold, for flowers with poor cold resistance, it is best to water them with warm water at around 30°C, which prevents the flowers from cold damage.

Pest control

Garlic juice

1

Mash purple-skin garlic, take out the juice, dilute it 10 times with water and pour it into the flower pot; it can prevent and control red spider mites, aphids and other pests.

Diluted essential balm

2

Add water to essential balm to dilute it 600 times into a spray, and spray it on the flowers; it can prevent and control aphids, scale insects and others.

Soap solution

3

Dissolve soap and boiling water at a ratio of 1:50, let it cool and spray it to prevent and control pests. Alternatively, put a little laundry detergent or soap into half a basin of clean water, stir up foam, and wipe the leaf surfaces with a cloth; after a few days the pests are eliminated.

Ginger solution

4

Mash ginger into a paste, add 20 times its volume of water and soak for 12 hours, then spray it on the potted plants; it can prevent and control leaf spot disease, sooty mold and others.

Cigarette butt water

5

When ants appear in the flower pot, soak cigarette butts and cut tobacco in water until the water turns brown, then sprinkle the water on the flower stems and leaves, and dilute the rest and pour it into the pot soil; the ants will be eliminated.

Keeping cut flowers fresh

Small-mouth vase

1

Use a small-mouth vase to hold the flowers, just big enough to fit the stems of the cut flowers, so the water evaporates a little more slowly.

Treating tap water

2

The water in the vase is best if it is groundwater, which is rich in minerals and free of bleaching powder. If there is no groundwater, use disinfected tap water; you can disinfect tap water by exposing it to the sun.

Cut the stems at a slant

3

Trim the stems of the cut flowers neatly with scissors, preferably at a slant, so the flowers can absorb water and nutrients to the greatest extent.

Purifying the water

4

Over time, microorganisms or other harmful bacteria breed in the water in the vase. If you want the cut flowers to stay fresh longer, add some vitamin C or dish soap to the water to ensure good water quality and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.

Fertilizing

For home flower growing, it is not advisable to use chemical fertilizers often; the nitrogen, phosphorus and other fertilizers needed for flower growth can be obtained from daily life.

Crushed eggshells

1

Eggshells are excellent fertilizer; they can make flowers grow luxuriantly and brightly colored. Just crush the eggshells and bury them in the flower pot.

Cooked soybeans

2

Cook soybeans, put 3-5 cooked soybeans into each pot of flowers, buried 2-3 cm deep; the fermentation of the soybeans will provide more organic fertilizer.

Fertilizing with crushed bones

3

Crush the pork bones and fish bones you would normally throw away, and bury them at the bottom of the flower pot or cover them on the soil surface.
