How many years does a desert rose need to be grown before it blooms?

Desert roses bought from the market usually come with flowers; only desert roses like this have selling appeal. A desert rose that is not blooming probably would not attract any customer to ask about it; it is just like a big radish, and not many people like it.

After buying a desert rose without flower buds and taking it home, as long as it is cared for properly that same year, it will bloom that same year, provided there is sufficient light. The desert rose did not get its name for nothing. Imagine the desert with no shade at all, where full-sun light is extremely abundant, so when we care for it at home, we must also have sufficient light for it to bloom. If the light conditions at home are only average, it is best not to bother with desert roses.

If you want a desert rose to bloom, besides sufficient light, there is also fertilizing. In spring, first give the desert rose a mixed fertilizer, using organic fertilizer plus a balanced compound fertilizer; organic fertilizer can be a bit more, and compound fertilizer a bit less. The amount of fertilizer should be determined by the size of the pot. Desert roses are still fairly sensitive to fertilizer.

Before the flowering period, apply fertilizer once more. This time the fertilizer is mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Before the flowering period, desert roses rely fairly heavily on phosphorus and potassium. Once the potting soil has sufficient phosphorus and potassium elements, the desert rose can produce good flowers. Control fertilizer and watering in small amounts, and do not make each application too heavy. Desert roses need light fertilizer applied frequently, so they can continuously store nutrients in their thick stems. When enough nutrients are stored, blooming is only a matter of moments.

If you want to grow desert roses, do not buy seeds. Even if you buy real seeds, after sowing and surviving, it will take at least two years to bloom. What is sold on the market is all grafted and has good vitality. If you buy fake ones, then it is really frustrating!
