When it comes to caring for succulents, we all know the three most important factors: sunlight, ventilation and watering. As long as you master these three, no matter what pot or soil you use, the succulents you grow will be just as beautiful. That's why I insist that succulents should be raised "poor" - this is the best way to unleash the survival "potential" of succulents and train them into tough plants!

I often see fellow succulent growers commenting and asking: whose nutrient soil is good? What ratio of granular soil is best for succulents...? Actually, there is no need to agonize over this. The soil for succulents just needs to be loose, breathable, non-compacting and non-waterlogging. You don't necessarily need nutrient soil, granular soil or anything like that.

The soil I often use for succulents is peat soil mixed with coal cinders. For raising old succulents, I use more coal cinders; for rooting succulents or small seedlings, I use less coal cinders and more peat, in order to retain water better. My succulents still grow very well this way. You can also use local materials - for example, add some coarse sand from a construction site to the soil. It saves money and is practical.

Next is choosing pots for succulents. There are many kinds of pots for succulents: coarse ceramic pots, porcelain pots, purple clay pots, plastic pots and so on. Different materials mean different prices. Generally, people who are truly hooked on succulents don't just keep a few pots - at least dozens, or even over a hundred. If they all had to use very good pots, wouldn't that be quite an expense?

So, to save money, we can repurpose old items from daily life to grow succulents. Some repurposed containers turn out even prettier than succulent pots - for example, teacups, various iron or wooden gift boxes, and so on. With a little modification, they can be used for succulents. When modifying them, try to punch more holes in the bottom. If you really can't make holes, lay more large-diameter clay pebbles or tile shards at the bottom instead.

Of course, the above is just my personal opinion - you could call it an economical way of growing succulents. If you're a big spender when it comes to succulent care, then you can skip all this!

Alright, besides the economical ways of growing succulents above, when caring for succulents we should try to let them receive more than 4 hours of sunlight every day, keep the soil from compacting, keep the pot from waterlogging, and provide good ventilation - then you too will grow beautiful succulents!
