How do you grow lush, green vegetables in home containers? They sprout and emerge quickly and grow fast, and in just over a month after planting they can be served at the table.
How to grow green vegetables in home containers, and the tricks
To grow baby bok choy in containers, first prepare fresh bok choy seeds. You can collect some yourself in spring, or buy seeds. In most regions it can be planted all year round, and it is especially suited to autumn planting. Prepare flower pots, empty pots at home, old flower pots, empty oil drums, anything can be used to grow it as long as it is filled with soil.
Use fairly fertile, loose soil. Garden soil will also do, but you need to add some base fertilizer, such as cake fertilizer, chicken manure fertilizer and so on. That way there will be no shortage of fertilizer nutrients later on, and the baby bok choy can grow bigger, more robust leaves.
Baby bok choy can be sown all year round. There is no need to soak the seeds, just scatter them directly into the soil, cover with 1 cm of soil, water thoroughly, and place in a spot with bright indirect light and good air circulation to wait for germination.
Germination is very fast, and generally all the seedlings will emerge in about a week. After emergence they can receive sunlight, and they must not be placed in too dark a spot, otherwise they will easily grow leggy. Do not water too much. Fermented rice washing water from home can also be used to water them, and the leaves will grow thicker and more luxuriant.
When the seedlings have grown to four or five leaves you can thin them out, pulling up some of the weak seedlings and leaving the sturdy ones, then apply an organic fertilizer once. This promotes even better growth. Baby bok choy planted in autumn has relatively few pests and diseases, so there is no need to spray anything; if there are insects you can use eco-friendly methods to get rid of them yourself.
After just over a month, the baby bok choy gradually grows up and can be harvested. The baby bok choy you grow yourself is clean and tastes good.
Lettuce, its growing method is similar to that of baby bok choy. As long as the seeds are fresh and not spoiled, the germination rate is also very high and germination is very fast. If lettuce is sown too densely, you can thin the seedlings, then keep fertilizing, and it grows very quickly too. In just over a month the leaves can grow quite large. You can pull off the leaves to eat.
Garlic sprouts, are just as easy to grow. Take the garlic heads you can't finish in the kitchen at home, plant them in the potting soil with the pointed end up and the root end down, water them, and in just over a week they sprout. Give them plenty of sun and plenty of fertilized water, and in just over a month they can grow about a chi tall, and you can cut them off to eat.
If you have a terrace, rooftop or large balcony at home, don't miss out. Grow a few pots of vegetables, pleasing to the eye and good to eat.
