What is it like to have a husband who loves growing plants? Old Wu's wife has the most say: "He works from dawn to dusk every day, his mind is full of his flowers and plants, and he spends three to five thousand a month!" This Old Wu is Wu Yuangen, who lives in Xiaoshan. At 45, he is nothing like a "greasy middle-aged man." He does not care for dinner parties or card games at all, he just loves growing plants. Over 6 years, he built a "Mountain of Flowers and Fruit" at home!

Apart from supporting the family, Old Wu spends all of his remaining salary on the "Mountain of Flowers and Fruit." Even when his wife gives him "a look," he still never stops growing plants!

Although he can only grow plants on the terrace, for Old Wu, having this bit of space is enough. As soon as the house was built in 2013, he had a plan in mind: not only flowers, but also fruit, a garden the whole family can enjoy~

The heavy burden of supporting the family means he cannot waste a single cent. Every brick and stone in the garden was picked up by Old Wu. The stones below were brought back by Old Wu after traveling more than ten kilometers to the riverbanks in the mountains.

The soil for the terrace was also carried up by Old Wu, one load at a time. He was so eager to start growing plants that he carried loads for several days, and his shoulders even blistered.

There is also a bamboo chair he picked up in the deep mountains of Guizhou. Because it could not be shipped by air, he could only take it home by train, bouncing along for dozens of hours... Once it was placed in the garden and the whole family could enjoy flowers and fruit, Old Wu felt it was all worth it.

There are several children in the family, so Old Wu specially planted fruit trees. The grapes grown in soil dug up from the fields and mixed with a bit of "farm organic fertilizer" shade the sky, and the whole family relies on them for cool shade in summer!

Even without spraying pesticides, the grapes still hang heavy with fruit. The children watch them every day, afraid the greedy birds will peck them first.

Besides grapes, the orange tree Old Wu cultivated himself is also outstanding. Each fruit is bigger than a fist, enough for the children to eat for a whole winter.

Besides fruit trees, Old Wu's home also has plenty of flowers, but he is a "practical type." He does not seek rare varieties. For him, plants must not only look good, but also be cheap and tough.

The pennywort (Centella asiatica) that loves to fill pots was transplanted from a friend years ago, and now it is everywhere, with large and small pots all planted full. Old Wu drilled holes in several stone planters to grow it, giving it a special feel~

Old Wu did not grow any expensive succulents either. The Sedum hispanicum he bought for a few yuan 5 years ago has now grown into a whole patch.

Cuban oregano (Plectranthus amboinicus) and moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora) can also be grown beautifully~

Old Wu is not only "stingy" about buying plants, most of his flower pots also come from "picking up bargains." Broken jars and bowls from the village... he picks up anything.

Old stone mortars that other families discarded long ago are used by him to grow plants, full of nostalgic style!

To save money, you also have to know how to DIY. A few stones of different lengths were tied together by Old Wu to make a hanging planter!

Growing plants is not only costly, it also takes energy. With more flowers in the garden, caring for them becomes more troublesome. Old Wu gets up at 4 or 5 o'clock every day to "inspect," and only feels at ease after checking every corner of the garden.

In spring the garden is full of blooming flowers, and in autumn the fragrance of ripe fruit drifts about. Old Wu's hard work has not only won the approval of the whole family, but also recognition from the village and town, earning him the "Most Beautiful Courtyard" award plaque.

The Old Wu of today,

with the company of his family, continues on the path of growing plants.

"In my spare time I fiddle with flowers and plants, and I can enjoy flowers and pick fruit with my family. Even weeding together is joyful..." - Wu Yuangen
