Is wheat a coarse grain or a refined grain? Explained clearly in one article
I. Is it or isn't it
Wheat is not a coarse grain; it is one of the refined grains, the other being rice. What distinguishes refined grains from coarse grains is that the bread, steamed buns, biscuits and other foods made from the flour ground from their caryopses have a relatively soft and tasty, delicate and smooth texture, while products made from coarse grains cannot achieve this texture. However, because refined grains are refined, their nutrients are correspondingly lost to some extent, and the nutrients they contain are somewhat fewer than those of coarse grains, but they can still ensure a normal nutritional supply.
II. Varieties of coarse grains
Apart from the white flour or white rice ground from wheat, products made from other crops all belong to coarse grains, including brown rice that has not been completely milled and rice of other colors. Because coarse grains are processed relatively simply, not as finely as refined grains, their texture is somewhat rough, but precisely for this reason they retain some nutrients that refined grains lack.
