Orchid leaf-type grass
There are many kinds of precious orchids. Some have artistry in the flowers, such as butterfly flowers, strange flowers, narcissus petals, and so on. These can only be appreciated during the flowering season. There are also orchids with artistry in the leaves, such as center-translucent artistry, crystal artistry, leaf-type artistry, and so on. As long as the orchid does not die, this artistry on the orchid leaves can be appreciated all year round.

When the author first started learning about orchids, I only recognized orchids with striped leaves or golden edges, because they look very different from ordinary orchids. As I gradually gained a deeper understanding of orchids, I came to know more precious orchids. Crystal artistry is relatively hard to recognize, but even harder to recognize than crystal artistry is leaf-type grass. Leaf-type grass can be found in many regions. A single Huilan (Cymbidium faberi) leaf-type grass seedling with a good plant shape is worth over ten thousand yuan, yet many people do not recognize it.

How do you recognize orchid leaf-type grass? The plant shape of leaf-type grass is noticeably shorter than that of orchids of the same variety. The ratio of leaf length to width is 8:1. Leaf-type grass generally has thick, sturdy leaves with strong, forceful form, a vigorous plant shape, and a steady, compact structure, and it has its own special ornamental value. In some regions, leaf-type grass is called dwarf variety.

Dwarf varieties are divided into 2 categories; one is the round-headed or blunt-headed dwarf variety that everyone knows. The leaf shape of this kind of dwarf variety is generally wood-grained, with raised skin, a particularly strict length-to-width ratio, and dragon-like veins.
The second category of dwarf variety is the leaf-shaped or abnormally shaped dwarf variety. This kind of dwarf variety generally has a peculiar, strange appearance. Many center-translucent crystal forms belong to this kind of dwarf variety.

People usually assume that all dwarf varieties must have raised skin and round heads. These are misconceptions! A true dwarf variety in nature must be stable for more than 3 consecutive generations under a standard length-to-width ratio before it can be called a dwarf variety.
To this day, many new orchid enthusiasts still do not recognize orchid leaf-type grass, and therefore have missed many opportunities.
