Moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora) is a flower almost everyone has grown, and many people grew it as children too. It blooms profusely, has a very long flowering period, sprouts on its own when you scatter a few seeds in a pot, and can also be propagated from cuttings taken from the stems. But some friends who grow moss rose find it only grows leaves and won't bloom, or blooms poorly. What exactly is going on?

When moss rose only grows leaves and won't bloom, one little trick makes the flowers fill the pot, and one pot becomes ten

Give it plenty of sun. It's very simple: if the leaves grow especially thickly, or even look a bit leggy, then it's very likely a lack of light. Moss rose loves sunshine, and the more sun it gets, the more it blooms. So a potted moss rose should be placed in the sunniest spot in the home, and even the strong sun of summer and early autumn is nothing to worry about.

Pinch back often, that is, cut off the tops of the stems. Once a stem is pinched, more side branches will grow from it, and those side branches will produce several times as many flowers.

The stems you remove and the stems you trim can be replanted as cuttings in pots, and you can propagate even more pots of moss rose.

Failure to bloom can also be caused by using too much nitrogen fertilizer and lacking phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. So when fertilizing, it's best to use a compound fertilizer or an organic fertilizer, and not rely on just one single type of fertilizer.

Do not water too much. Letting it dry out a little can actually encourage it to bloom. The potting soil must be dry before you water it thoroughly, and don't water before it dries out. This makes it more likely to produce flower buds.

Moss rose grown indoors is best taken outside to get some sun, some fresh air and some breeze. This way it grows healthier and is less likely to get pests.

Fertilize regularly as usual, give it more sun, water it more with fertilizer water, and spray some monopotassium phosphate, or cake fertilizer water, or compound fertilizer, to increase the fertility of the soil.

Loosen the soil and fertilize. Loosen the potting soil, then top-dress with some organic fertilizer, or peat soil, or leaf mold, to add nutrients. When fertility is sufficient, it also grows thick stems, strong leaves and lots of flowers. Some of Xiaoya's gardening friends grow moss rose that can produce 100 flowers at a time, which is really impressive!
