Preparing the seeds

Ginkgo nuts are also called white nuts (bai guo). They are a kind of traditional Chinese medicine. Although they can relieve cough and asthma, they are slightly toxic, so everyone must be careful not to eat them raw or eat too many.

Ginkgo nuts generally mature in October. We can go pick them up under ginkgo trees, or buy a few nuts. The nuts should be as fresh as possible.

Seed treatment

Remove the flesh and wash them clean, leaving the white inner pit. Because the outer shell of the pit is relatively hard, it is very difficult for it to sprout if planted directly, so we need to use pliers to nick a small opening at the large end of the seed. Be careful when handling it to avoid damaging the seed.

Promoting germination

Soak the treated seeds in clean water for about 24 hours.

Then plant the soaked seeds in soil, with the large end that has the small opening facing up, and spray a little water every day. Do not use too much or too little. After about twenty days, the seeds will sprout small tips. Everyone needs to wait patiently.

Planting

At this point, the seeds that have already sprouted can be planted. Prepare the container and potting soil for planting. For the potting soil, it is best to choose vermiculite and garden soil. Insert the sprouted part facing down into the potting soil, then water thoroughly, and keep it in an environment with scattered light and good ventilation.

The planted seeds grow very quickly, and in about three to four months they can grow into small plants. At this point, you can enjoy the gracefully dancing ginkgo leaves. Placed in the living room or on a desk, they will be a beautiful sight.
