A 3 sq m small balcony can also be turned into a garden, so stop wasting it
Grow flowers on a small balcony like this, saving space and looking great!
Most high-rise balconies are only three to five sq m, so how to grow more flowers in such a small area is a problem most flower lovers face. Now Huahua introduces some practical tips from four aspects: growing flowers on the ground, on the walls, in the air, and on the railings!
1. Growing flowers on the balcony floor
1. In the corners of the balcony, place some potted plants at varying heights, with taller plants near the wall corner and shorter plants closer to the corner, so that they rise and fall in layers and form a plant corner!
Besides considering the height of the plants, you can also add some color coordination. The outer and taller plants can be more muted in color, while the inner and shorter plants can be brighter, which makes it especially beautiful!
2. If you are a Virgo and just want to place the flowers neatly together, then you might as well use a flower stand, preferably a multi-tier one, so you can place even more flowers!
Place large potted plants on the upper tier of the flower stand and small potted plants on the lower tier, making reasonable use of space and light. When they bloom, it becomes a small garden.
If you find it inconvenient to place it by the window, you can also put the flower stand against the wall. Usually it can serve not only as a flower stand, but also as a shelf for storing odds and ends.
If you do not like square, conventional flower stands, you can also use hollow bricks to build a vintage-style flower stand yourself. It looks great!
3. For growing flowers on the balcony floor, besides the above 2 methods, there is another way: directly on the balcony, build a planting strip with cement, then fill it with soil and plant your favorite flowers right into it!
Besides growing flowers, you can also fill it with water, raise a few fish, and grow a pool of bowl lotus. But you must do a good job of waterproofing the balcony!
If you are worried that the cement planting strip will cause problems with the balcony's load-bearing capacity, you can use stones to form a ring along the wall, place your favorite flowers and plants there, and create a simple flower border!
Or place some pebbles, run a water pipe, and set out clay pots to make a cool little water feature.
2. Growing flowers on balcony walls
Do not waste the walls on both sides of the balcony or the partition wall between the balcony and the living room. With just a few small tools, you can not only grow many flowers, but also easily create a flower wall. It is especially beautiful!
1. On the side wall of the balcony, you can buy a wooden trellis and plant clematis, Chinese rose, nasturtium... It is unbelievably stylish, and it will not damage the wall!
This kind of grid trellis can not only be used for climbing flowers, but you can also use hooks to hang many pots of flowers, saving space very effectively!
The trellis can be used not only on the side of the balcony. The partition between the balcony and the living room also gets good light, so you can install one there and plant nasturtium, making a perfectly beautiful flower wall!
If you think the trellis takes up too much space, or the indoor balcony has poor light, you can use a wire rack and plant some shade-tolerant climbing flowers below, such as wax plant, ivy, pothos, and so on. With good care, they can also grow into a green plant wall.
3. Besides trellises and wire mesh, there is another method that can quickly create a green plant wall, and that is planting bags made of waterproof cloth. Fill rows of pockets with soil and plant pothos, spider plant, ferns, and other flowers, and it instantly becomes a green plant wall!
A clean white wall paired with tender green ferns is very comfortable and very pleasing to the eye!
If you think building a green plant wall is too much trouble and you just want to simply grow a few small flowers, what methods are there? There are plenty! You can use iron racks and wood to install a few shelves on the wall.
You can also have the renovation workers install a few uniquely shaped shelves during renovation and paint them the same color as the wall.
If you really do not want too much trouble, you can also use wooden boards and thin wooden stakes to DIY it yourself! Like the picture below, place cacti on it. How stylish!
If you still think it is too troublesome, then keep it simple and direct: buy a few wall-mounted flower pots! Hang them up and plant flowers in them!
3. Growing flowers in the air on the balcony
If you want to grow more flowers, you must make full use of every effective space on the balcony. You can hang them in midair or suspend them overhead.
1. Buy special hanging pots, hang them on the clothes-drying rack, and plant petunias, lobelia, dolphin flowers, marguerite daisies, and others that can bloom into flower balls.
You can also weave a net bag yourself with hemp rope, put the flower pot inside, and freely adjust the height!
If you are even more handy, you can use plastic bottles and hemp rope to make a multi-tier hanging flower-growing setup, so you can grow more and better flowers and vegetables!
2. Besides hanging, we can also build a pergola and plant beautiful climbing flowers such as clematis, bougainvillea, yellow banksia rose, confederate jasmine, Chinese trumpet creeper, cypress vine, and so on, letting the flowers climb along the pergola!
If you think a pergola is too troublesome and too rustic, you can also directly use ropes and poles to build a simple pergola and plant lush green plants. It is just so fresh!
3. If you think a pergola is not romantic enough, you can build a trellis or wire rack on the roof and let the flowers climb up onto the roof, so you can look up and see a sky full of blooms!
Or growing a grapevine overhead is also nice. When the fruit ripens, you can reach up and pick it to eat~
4. Growing flowers on balcony railings and security windows
Balcony railings have good light and good ventilation. Not using them to grow flowers is simply wasteful!
1. Wall-mounted flower pots with hooks can be hung on the inner side of the railing, and you can grow lots and lots of flowers~
You can also customize an iron flower stand according to the size of your railing. It is simple to install, and you can put all the flowers in it. It is very neat and clean~
If you do not like iron flower stands, you can also make one from treated timber, which pairs well with wooden flooring and is very harmonious!
2. Once the inner side of the railing is put to use, do not waste the outer side either. Hang wall-mounted flower pots there too, and the blooms will be even more splendid!
Of course, there is also a more advanced way to play: wrap the railing with climbing flowers such as morning glory, climbing Chinese rose, and so on. Looking up from below, it is simply dazzling!
3. The above applies to outer balconies. Then what about inner balconies with security windows? The method is the same: hang wall-mounted flower pots!
4. Then what about an inner balcony that does not even have security window railings? Easy! Just make a flower stand on the outer side of the windowsill or use a pull-out clothes-drying rack, and that is it! But pay attention to safety, and keep flower pots and soil as light as possible!
Leisure area for tea and entertainment, so relaxing!
Now that there is a place to grow flowers, after working so hard for most of the day, you should leave yourself a place to rest and enjoy this hard-won garden time!
1. Put in a sofa for reading and chatting
A sofa is more suitable for an indoor balcony, since you do not have to worry about rain. Place a long sofa there and, amid the greenery, read and chat with friends or your loved one.
You can also place a single sofa and, amid the flowers blooming and falling, enjoy some time alone!
For an outdoor balcony, where you worry about rain and sun, you can place a water-resistant rattan chair or iron chair.
If you have children at home or you yourself have a girly heart, you can also directly make a swing and paint it so it is not afraid of rain. Of course, pay attention to safety. It can be used if you live on the 1st floor.
2. Put in a dining table for meals and tea
A romantic date on the balcony is just the best! When the autumn air is crisp, make a few simple meals, eat while drinking red wine, and you will be intoxicated without the wine doing it!
If you have a larger family, you can also place a large dining table and have a family gathering on the weekend~
If you like drinking tea, place a tea table and sit cross-legged among the lush plants to drink tea. It is also very cozy!
3. Put in a small bed for sleeping in
Place a lounge chair on the balcony. When you have nothing to do, fan yourself with a palm-leaf fan, smell the flowers, and take a short nap. It is very pleasurable.
Make a hanging chair, lie in it and sway back and forth, and you will slowly fall asleep!
Or simply make a wider cabinet. It can store things, and when guests come, you can lay out bedding and it can serve as a bed!
4. Make a tatami for gatherings and storage
Tatami is often used in home renovations, and you can also make a row of it on the balcony. When friends come, it can be used as seating, and it can also store all kinds of odds and ends!
If you think it is too hard to sit on, lay down a soft cushion or blanket, hug a throw pillow, and it is so comfortable!
Beautiful flooring and rugs make the balcony cozier
Now that the flower-growing area and leisure area are all set up, there is one more thing we should do before creating these two areas, and that is installing the flooring.
1. Install treated timber or lay floor tiles
Nowadays, most people's balconies have either floor tiles or treated timber. Treated timber looks better when matched, and you can lay it yourself, so it is used quite a lot!
2. Pair it with a beautiful rug
To make the balcony cozier and more comfortable, we can also lay a rug on top of the floor tiles or flooring. It does not need to be too expensive, as long as it matches the sofa and the surrounding environment!
3. Lay artificial turf
If you want the balcony to be even greener, you can also lay artificial turf. Sitting or lying on it, playing around, all is fine!
