Pothos actually has another nickname, "devil's ivy." There are also pothos with golden-yellow markings on their leaves, called golden pothos. It is a very popular indoor plant, a very fast-growing plant that is easy to care for, and propagating it is even simpler - you do not even need soil or a pot.

The method I am about to introduce to you is water propagation by stem cuttings. This method also works for growing other green plants; you only need one stem segment to root it in water.

First, you need to prepare a healthy stem segment with about 3 to 4 leaves and a length of about 10 cm. Cut about 2 cm above the bottom of the stem, making the cut slightly angled, which makes rooting easier.

The circled spot above is the growth node of the pothos. You can see a small aerial root on it, and a leaf will grow from the other side. The cut should be made just below this growth node.

After cutting, do not rush to put it in water. You still need to remove the lower leaves first. No matter what plant you are propagating by water cuttings, the leaves must not be submerged in water, and too many leaves also tend to consume too much water, which can easily cause yellowing.

You need to cut off all the lower leaves, leaving about 4 leaves at the top, which is enough. Then place it in a ventilated, shaded spot to let the wound dry, for about 3 to 5 minutes.

After that, you need to prepare clean water, preferably rainwater or tap water that has been left to stand for two or three days. The bottom 5 cm of the stem must have no leaves. You can dip the bottom cut in a little rooting powder and then place it in water; even without rooting powder it will still promote sprouting.

Then you need to prepare a transparent container, which can be a glass bottle or a plastic bottle. The opening should not be too wide. It is best not to submerge the whole stem in water. Finally, just place it in a suitable spot. Before the stem has rooted, you generally need to change the water once every 3 to 5 days, and there is no need to change the water too frequently.

The spot where you place it should be ventilated and let in light, but avoid direct sunlight. Sunlight on the water easily grows green algae, and green algae can easily cover the roots and cause the pothos stems and roots to rot. Water-propagated pothos stems generally root and sprout within two to three weeks.
