Due to regional environmental differences and individual care habits, moss terrarium care methods cannot be precisely quantified. Some experienced moss enthusiasts can, under conditions of reasonable regulation of humidity, light and temperature inside the bottle, keep the bottle sealed for half a year without opening the lid while the moss plants remain in good condition. Shop owner Wu Ting explained moss care knowledge to us: in the process of care, be good at observing, summarize experience, and master methods that suit you. Every little life needs to be cared for with heart and experienced with heart. As long as you put in love, growing moss well is not difficult.

Part 1 Creating the right environment for moss terrariums

For ease of viewing, moss terrariums are generally placed in transparent glass containers. Moss prefers warm and humid environments, and a properly sealed ecosystem bottle also helps cultivate a slightly humid environment, which is what is known as closed cultivation of moss. During normal care, open the lid appropriately for ventilation and place it in a bright, indirectly lit spot indoors. If the humidity inside the bottle is sufficient, you can go a long time without spraying water. Never water blindly or excessively. If you find too much standing water in the bottle, remove it promptly.

Whether you bought it or dug it up, before planting, use a spray bottle to rinse the soil off the back of the moss until clean. Clean here means free of residual organic matter; mud dug from the ground cannot be used. Peat soil is recommended, preferably fine and powdery without clumps.

Moss likes a slightly moist environment, but standing water must be avoided. Generally speaking, the moss planting substrate should include three layers. The bottom layer is usually covered with gravel to prevent standing water from seeping into the soil of the growing layer. Summarizing past experience, Yulu Life generally uses pumice, which better creates a natural effect. The middle layer is to prevent the planting medium from seeping into the gravel layer under the force of gravity; we use sphagnum moss. The top layer is the planting medium; peat soil is recommended, and an appropriate amount of akadama soil and activated charcoal can be added to blend it.

Part 2 Key points for maintaining the environment of moss terrariums

Moss tends to wither under strong sunlight. Placing it in a bright spot indoors with light is sufficient. Never expose it to direct strong light. If conditions permit, occasionally exposing it to early morning or late afternoon sunlight can have a certain sterilizing effect. In winter, mild direct sunlight is best; in summer, avoid sunlight and place it in a bright, shady spot. Do not let it get too hot, and do not let it get too wet.

Plants and moss are best watered in the morning or evening; do not water at noon. Moss needs an environment with high air humidity, rather than needing a large amount of water itself; do not confuse the two. Excessive watering will cause moss to rot. You can regularly check whether there is mist inside the bottle due to the temperature difference between inside and outside. Plenty of mist means humidity is sufficient, and no watering is needed. Keeping the inside of the bottle slightly moist is best.

1. Water from an ecological fish tank: the water quality is pure and rich in inorganic salts.

2. Purified water: the water quality is pure but lacks inorganic salts.

3. Distilled water: the water quality is very pure, with almost no inorganic salts.

4. Tap water contains chlorine and cannot be used directly; it will inhibit moss growth and may even kill it. Let tap water sit for a few days so the chlorine fully evaporates before use.

If conditions permit, it is recommended to open the lid appropriately every day for ventilation, preferably for one to two hours. Maintaining some ventilation can effectively prevent mold and rot caused by excessive stuffiness and dampness of the moss and plants inside the bottle. Experienced friends in humid southern regions can try open-lid cultivation later on.

Part 3 Essential tips for growing moss plants well

1. Insufficient air humidity: you can move the moss to the most humid place at home (the bathroom), increase air humidity with a humidifier or closed cultivation, or wrap it with plastic wrap during the day, then uncover it at night to let the plants breathe.

2. Improper soil medium: moss that has been dug up is best kept with 3-5cm of soil attached. After collecting it, do not rush to plant it. If the bottom layer is too thin, you can fill it with sand, spray a small amount of water, and press the roots into contact. Then when planting, you must press it down gently but firmly to prevent poor contact between the plant and the medium, which would prevent it from getting the best growing environment.

3. Lighting issues: indirect light cultivation is sufficient; the light requirements are not high, just avoid direct sun. During closed cultivation, if there is mist inside the bottle, you do not need to spray water; wait until it dries before spraying. Try to avoid spraying moss directly with tap water; boiled water or mineral water is best, because chlorine will affect the plants' growing environment.

4. Moss needs an environment with higher air humidity rather than large amounts of watering. It likes a cool, shady environment with indirect light rather than a completely lightless spot. Moderate open-lid ventilation helps prevent the high-temperature, high-humidity environment inside the bottle that moss dislikes. In summer, when it is hot and stuffy, increase the time with the lid open; in winter, when temperatures are lower, appropriately reduce the time with the lid open.

Part 4 Signs of illness in moss terrariums and solutions

There are generally two causes:

1. If the environment is too dry and the temperature is too high, moss tends to turn white. If the environment inside the moss bottle is dry or the temperature is too high and you keep spraying water, the moss tends to turn yellow.

Solution: create a relatively humid and cool environment, and after a period of closed cultivation it will recover.

2. Exposure to intense sun and being in a shady, lightless spot for a long time can easily make moss turn white or yellow.

Solution: move it to an indoor spot with indirect light, create a relatively humid and cool environment, and after a period of closed cultivation it will recover.

Cause: this situation is due to too much water in the moss substrate. The moss is soaked in water for a long time and rots, turns black and dies. Moss growth requires a humid environment, not the moss itself being wet.

Solution: increase the time with the lid open for ventilation and reduce the frequency of spraying water.

Cause: this situation is caused by poor ventilation and an overly stuffy and damp environment inside the bottle.

Solution: increase the time with the lid open for ventilation, appropriately reduce the frequency of spraying water, and if conditions permit, expose it to early morning or late afternoon sunlight for sterilization.

Part 5 Product recommendations:

Fence, variegated leaves and star jasmine

Recommended reason: it condenses nature into a bottle and brings it into the reinforced concrete city, giving the home a touch of nature and adding a bit of comfort. This terrarium bottle is very suitable for placing on a desk at home or in the office.
