Remembering childhood summers: those beautiful little things in our memories

The Great Heat has passed,
the hottest summer of the year has arrived!
It seems that even the wind blowing through the air,
carries the unique summer heat.
Although in today's summers,
air conditioning and wifi have become an indispensable part,
but sometimes,
I still miss that happy summer.
The summer in my memory is the season of watermelon.
In an era without refrigerators or air conditioners,
the courtyard at the mouth of the alley was the perfect place to chill watermelon.
Drop the watermelon into a bamboo basket,
soak it in the clear, cool well water for half a day,
fish it out and cut it in half,
red flesh and green rind,
the sweet juice immediately runs down,
take a bite,
cool and refreshing in every mouthful.
Back then in summer,
ice pops and soda were still sold by peddlers along the streets.
With a shout at the mouth of the alley,
children big and small all rushed over in a crowd.
One mao, two mao, the most expensive was 5 mao,
Guangming ice bricks, Seven Dwarfs, Snow Lotus...
Take a bite,
and all the summer heat instantly melted away.
Back then, the orange soda
was still Beibingyang in glass bottles.
When you opened it, it fizzed and bubbled,
take a sip,
and the sweetness poured straight from your throat down to your stomach.
The summer in my memory
is the season of palm-leaf fans and cool mats.
On summer evenings,
every household loved to bring out a little stool,
gathering at the mouth of the alley or in the lanes.
Gossiping about the neighbors,
chatting about trivial little things.
Everyone had to hold a palm-leaf fan,
cooling off while shooing away the annoying mosquitoes.
And as for the children,
they would surely grab a flashlight
and run into the dark woods to catch cicada nymphs.
Sometimes they'd catch a dozen in one night,
sometimes only a few in one night...
The woods were filled with the laughter and joy of children.
If you didn't want to catch cicadas, that was fine too,
the twinkling fireflies were also children's playmates.
Friends in groups of three or five,
in the noisy romping about,
startled fireflies took flight,
quickly lighting up the dark night.
Squat in the grass and catch a few fireflies,
put them in a glass bottle,
take them home and place them by the mosquito net,
and even your dreams seemed to have a dreamy fragrance.
Childhood summers were the season of catching dragonflies and grasshoppers.
Especially before it rained,
dragonflies flew low along the eaves,
grab a big broom,
and you could swat several at once.
Grasshoppers were also great childhood playmates.
Squat in the grass, pick your moment,
pounce with all your might,
and the grasshopper was caught.
If you caught a lot,
too many to hold in your hands,
you'd find a blade of grass to string them together,
and compare with your friends to see who was the best!
In childhood summers,
what was most exciting of all were the fruits and vegetables.
Pick a prickly cucumber from the field ridge by the roadside,
take a bite and the fresh flavor fills your mouth.
Not to mention the grapes covering the trellis,
clusters hanging over the archway, filling the air with fragrance.
Bring over a little stool,
step up and grab a handful, your hands full of sweet juice.
What I loved most in my childhood memories
was naturally going to play in the lake with my friends.
Lotus leaves crowded together one after another,
seeming to stretch all the way to the horizon.
Huge and gorgeous lotus flowers
stretched out among the green leaves.
Punting a small boat and drifting on the lake,
laughter and chatter drifted out faintly.
Although many years have passed,
the childhood summers in my memory
still seem to shine vividly in my mind.
Even after ten or twenty years have passed,
thinking of that summer, it is still beautiful.
About summer,
what memories do you have?
