Summer has the most mosquitoes and bugs, and all your hard work growing flowers just feeds the insects - fungus gnats, red spider mites, white powdery scale insects, big bug pupae... just thinking about it gives you goosebumps. You buy a few kinds of insecticide and spray, but not only does it stink, it doesn't even kill them clean! Don't worry, hurry up and learn a couple of tricks below, and the bugs and eggs will be killed off completely, and your flowers will thrive just in time for the Start of Autumn!
Laundry detergent to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
Because laundry detergent is alkaline and also contains bactericidal ingredients, it is highly irritating to insects and can also stick to small bugs and suffocate them. It mainly deals with mites, aphids, red spider mites, whiteflies, scale insects and eggs.
Insect-killing method:
Mix one spoon of laundry detergent into 500ml of warm water; warm water dissolves the detergent better. Stir well, let it cool, pour it into a small spray bottle, and spray both the front and back of leaves that have bugs. Be careful not to spill it into the potting soil. After about 1 hour, wipe the leaves with a cloth dipped in clean water; if wiping is inconvenient, you can lay the pot on its side and rinse it with water to reduce the irritation of the laundry detergent on the flowers.
Essential balm to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
Essential balm contains liquid paraffin, which can block the insects' spiracles. It works from small ones like aphids, whiteflies and red spider mites to large ones like mosquitoes, flies and cockroaches.
Insect-killing method:
Mix 1 drop of essential balm into 600ml of clean water, pour it into a spray bottle, spray it on the flower leaves that have bugs, then put a plastic bag over the flower for 15 minutes, and in a little while the bugs will all be dead!
Mosquito coil to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
Mosquito coils can drive away mosquitoes and fungus gnats. If your balcony is fairly enclosed, growing flowers will inevitably attract bugs, so hurry up and hang a mosquito coil!
Insect-killing method:
Light the mosquito coil near the flowerpot. If the flowerpot is fairly small, you can cover the pot and the mosquito coil with a large cardboard box to form an enclosed space (mind your safety). After the mosquito coil burns out, you can also pour the mosquito coil ash into the flowerpot to prevent eggs from developing into small flying bugs.
Ginger water to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
The pungent smell of ginger can sterilise and disinfect, gently drive away aphids and red spider mites, and also prevent various fungal diseases of flowers, such as leaf spot, rust spot and so on.
Insect-killing method:
Cut 1 piece of ginger into fine shreds, soak in water for 5 hours, then filter out the ginger shreds, dip a cloth in the ginger water and wipe the flower leaves. Gardeners who find it troublesome can also put it in a spray bottle and spray; it can be used every day.
Loofah water to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
The liquid in loofah leaves and loofah vines can disinfect and reduce internal heat, and kill green caterpillars, moth larvae and so on. It is natural and non-irritating, and can even serve as fertiliser for flowers~
Insect-killing method:
Gardeners who grow loofah at home can cut the loofah vine and put it in a plastic bottle; the loofah liquid will flow into the bottle, just wait overnight. Then mix it with half clean water, spray it on the infested leaves, and in a little while the bugs will die. If there are flesh worms in the soil, you can spray that too!
Tomato leaves to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
Tomato leaves are actually toxic and can poison red spider mites and aphids, and also drive away mosquitoes and flies.
Insect-killing method:
Pick 3-5 tomato leaves and mash them, soak them in 100ml of clean water, filter after 1 hour, pour the tomato leaf water into a small bottle, and spray it on the flowers with bugs. Use it once every 2 days, and the pests will soon be wiped out.
Chive water to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
The smell of chives is also irritating and can kill aphids and red spider mites. It can also prevent leaf spot and has a bactericidal effect.
Insect-killing method:
Chop chives finely, soak in water overnight, then filter out the chive water and spray it on the infested spots. You can do this once every 2-3 days. If you find it troublesome, you can directly juice the chives: one handful of chives to 100ml of water, blend, filter and it is ready to spray.
Spring onion and onion to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
Even people can hardly stand the smell of spring onions and onions, and they are also excellent against aphids, soft flesh worms and eggs. It does not matter if it flows into the pot, as it can even serve as fertiliser for flowers.
Insect-killing method:
Take 5-6 spring onions or half an onion, chop them finely and soak in water (200ml). After soaking for 5 hours, filter out the onion water and spray it on the flower leaves, or just pour it into the soil.
Milk to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
Milk can form a film on flowers. This film wraps around the bugs and can suffocate them. It can kill aphids and mealybugs.
Insect-killing method:
Pour milk (expired milk is fine too) into a spray bottle, spray it on the infested leaves, also spraying both sides, then put it in a ventilated, shady place and wait for the milk to coagulate into a film; after about 1-2 hours it can suffocate the bugs. Afterwards, also wipe with clean water to avoid the film affecting the flowers' growth.
Coffee to kill insects
Insect-killing principle:
The caffeine in coffee can kill aphids, red spider mites and scale insects. Used coffee grounds after grinding coffee, or low-sugar black coffee, are more effective. Instant coffee and 3-in-1 coffee contain a lot of sugar, so it is best not to use them.
Insect-killing method:
Brew coffee in water; as long as the solution is not sticky to the touch, it is fine. Spray twice a day, and after 2-3 days you will see the white bugs turn into black scorched shells. If you cannot use up the brewed coffee in one go, you can put it in the fridge and use it multiple times~
