Snake Plant: Dig Out Some Soil, Rubber Plant: Cut a Piece of Bark - No Fertilizer Needed and They'll Sprout New Shoots Fast and Burst the Pot

Been growing a snake plant for half a year and it won't put out new shoots? Is your rubber plant always just one bare stem with no side shoots? Lately lots of gardening friends have been asking these two questions, so today Huahua has 2 tips for you, guaranteed to get your snake plant sprouting like crazy and your rubber plant pushing out side shoots in no time!
Dig Out a Bit of Soil Around the Snake Plant's Roots, and the Little Shoots Can Split the Pot Open!
Many people who grow snake plants will notice that theirs doesn't budge for months on end - no growth, no new shoots. What's going on? You might want to check the snake plant's pot.
Steps
1. Snake plant roots are shallow and underdeveloped, yet many households grow them in this kind of deep pot, which is very stuffy and bad for the roots' breathing. Over time, the snake plant not only won't sprout but may even get root rot.
2. In this case, we can dig out some of the soil from the surface of the snake plant's pot, but not too much - just enough to expose a little of the roots, about 2-3 cm deep.
3. With a little of the roots exposed at the surface, the snake plant will sprout lots of little shoots like crazy after 1 month!
4. After the little shoots emerge, we fill the soil we dug out back in to firm things up and keep the snake plant from leaning.
5. Snake plants are shallow-rooted plants, so in your regular care, don't use a deep pot - use a shallow one. This makes it easy to sprout and prevents root rot.
Cut a Piece of Bark Off the Rubber Plant, and New Shoots Will Sprout Like Crazy - No More Bachelor Stem!
Many households grow their rubber plant into a single stem - tall and ramrod straight, no side shoots, and prone to growing crooked and top-heavy. How to fix it? Simple - just use a blade and cut a piece of bark!
Steps
1. Find the spot where you want the rubber plant to grow side shoots, and make sure that spot has a growth point, or a leaf. If the growth point you're encouraging has a leaf, remove the leaf.
2. Above the growth point you're encouraging,
0.5-1 cm up, use sharp garden shears or a blade to score two horizontal wounds. The length of the wounds is about half the circumference of the branch, the depth goes roughly to the xylem of the bark, and the distance between the two wounds is about 0.2 cm.
3. After about 1 month, the growth point below the scoring will be able to sprout.
4.
Scoring the rubber plant's bark blocks the plant's nutrient transport, inhibits growth of the upper branches, and promotes sprouting of the lower growth points. This way, the rubber plant won't be a single straight stem, but will grow multiple side branches, forming a beautiful umbrella-like tree shape!
