One of the most controversial industries in American history is coal!
Some say, "No nuclear and no coal? You're tying me in knots!"
The United States wants both nuclear power and coal-fired power, and that has everyone confused too.
#BreakTheChainOfNoNuclearNoCoal
The United States has the highest total nuclear power generation in the world, with 99 nuclear reactors supplying 20% of the nation's electricity; coal-fired power plants number more than 500, accounting for 30% of the country's electricity. When pressures from residents' health, labor rights, water sources, land and carbon reduction come crashing down all at once, the United States realized that transitioning away from coal power is an urgent priority, and with time and investment costs extremely limited, while safety and environmental/social justice must also be taken into account, renewable energy is truly the path that should be taken.
#QuitCoalAddictionAndMoveTowardAJustTransition
"From the Ashes" interviews community residents, climate scientists, environmental movement workers, businesses and officials from various local governments, exploring the impact of coal from mining to power generation on labor rights, the environment, water sources, air and health, while also visiting American towns that once relied on coal mines and coal power, documenting the development of the transition from coal power to renewable energy, including the just transition process of supporting and assisting local communities and workers in developing other industries.
#LocalEnergyTransitionActionsBeyondTrumpsWill
Even as calls for reducing coal grow stronger in society, Trump still withdrew from the Paris Agreement immediately after taking office and led conservative political and business forces in declaring they would "stop the war on coal," yet more and more cities across the United States not only ignore federal government policy but also take on the task of developing energy conservation and green energy themselves. In 2017, more than a hundred mayors across the United States jointly set a goal of achieving 100% renewable energy use by 2035.
What kind of coal-reduction battle is this country, once heavily "addicted to coal," going through, and how is it facing the various challenges of the transition process?
