Introduction

Green plants and potted flowers are essential decorative elements for home life. Keeping some flowers and plants at home has many benefits, as they can both beautify the living space and delight the mood. "Huasheng Potted Plant Diary, Issue 1222" introduces you to a super easy-to-grow woody flowering plant.

Today's Featured Plant

Woody plants are perennial; plant once and enjoy them year after year. Placed indoors, they have an excellent decorative effect, but at the same time, the indoor environment is not very suitable for woody plants to grow, so most household indoor plants are herbaceous flowers such as pothos, spider plant, succulents, Eustoma, and kalanchoe. The flower introduced today is called silver-spotted begonia (Begonia maculata), a new type of ornamental flowering shrub that is beautiful, easy to care for, and can be grown indoors too.

Silver-spotted begonia

Silver-spotted begonia (Begonia maculata) is a perennial shrub in the family Begoniaceae, genus Begonia, belonging to the woody flowering plants. It is native to South America and has been introduced and cultivated in many places in China, mostly as private potted ornamentals. Especially in the north and northeast regions, it has become a very common indoor bonsai flower. Its leaves are dark red with silver star-shaped spots on the surface, hence the name; the more sun it gets, the redder the leaves become. It produces small pink flowers in the shape of hearts, blooming in clustered groups.

High ornamental value

The flowers of the silver-spotted begonia bloom in clusters, hanging among the branches like strings of small pink grapes. In the northeast region it is also called "grape string". Its flowering period is very long, and once it starts blooming it often does not stop, continuing from spring all the way to autumn, blooming for over half the year. Sometimes in winter, with sufficient light and temperature (placed indoors), it blooms as usual. It is known as a "flowering machine", with an extremely long ornamental period.

Even easier to grow than pothos

Silver-spotted begonia is one of the easiest woody flowering plants to grow that the author has seen. Its vitality is extremely tenacious: snap off a branch, put it in clean water, and in about half a month it will take root and sprout; transplant it into a pot and you have another flowering plant. Daily care is also easy. It is not picky about soil; just dig up a bit of dirt from the ground and it can be planted, with no need to buy soil separately. It has low requirements for fertilizer and water; water when the potting soil is dry, and leave it alone when it is not. It is even easier to tend than pothos and spider plant.

Can also be grown indoors

The disadvantage of silver-spotted begonia is that it is not cold-tolerant. In northern regions, it cannot be placed outdoors in winter and must be moved indoors to overwinter. It is shade-tolerant and has low light requirements, so it can be grown indoors without any problem, as long as it gets a little indirect light. In the southern and South China regions it can be planted in the ground, where it can grow to 3 m tall; as an indoor potted plant, if the pot is large enough, growing to 2 m is no problem. It blooms in all four seasons, offers great value for money, and is very much worth cultivating.
