Divorced for over ten years, my ex-husband invited me to our daughter's wedding, and when I saw the prospective son-in-law, I was stunned
My ex-husband, divorced for fifteen years, called to tell me our daughter was about to get married, but hoped I would stop it. When I got the call I was very confused and didn't understand why he wanted me to do that, and at the same time I couldn't help wondering what kind of person our daughter had chosen to be her husband. When I saw the prospective son-in-law in person, I was completely dumbfounded.
My marriage with my ex-husband began romantically but ended in a mess. He and I fell in love freely back then, and from the moment we started dating, both sets of parents disapproved, saying the two of us were simply not suited. At the time we were in the honeymoon phase of our romance and couldn't listen to their advice at all, and disregarding their opposition, we married without a second thought. In the beginning our days were still sweet and loving, and our little life was very comfortable. But after a while we discovered many flaws in each other, and many of them were things we couldn't accept. Fortunately, we soon had a daughter. Our focus immediately shifted to her.
I originally thought I could live my whole life with him like that, but I never expected that when our daughter was seven years old I couldn't bear it anymore. His personality became more and more calculating, and we argued almost every day. After that I chose to divorce him and returned alone to my parents' home. I still remember that on the day I left, our daughter begged me desperately not to go, and her eyes were swollen from crying. Helpless, I had to coax her to sleep and then quietly leave, afraid that if I saw her eyes or heard her voice I wouldn't be able to leave. Later I started my own family again, thinking my ex-husband would take good care of our daughter, so I didn't really look after her, and only now do I know how absurdly wrong I was and how much I failed her.
My ex-husband was very anxious on the phone, hoping I could rush over as soon as possible to stop our daughter's marriage. On the way I kept thinking that even if our daughter hadn't found some outstanding young man, it would at least be a young fellow about her own age, so why stop it? After arriving, when I saw the prospective son-in-law in person, I was very surprised; he was much older than our daughter, and judging by appearances the two were very ill-matched. I was very puzzled and didn't understand why our daughter wanted to be with him. When our daughter saw me arrive, she was a bit surprised at first, then with a faint expression politely invited me to sit down and drink tea, appearing especially distant, which made me extremely uncomfortable.
Our daughter told me she chose him because he is considerate and knows how to take care of people. He treats her very well and often indulges her little tempers... During our conversation I learned that my ex-husband, out of resentment toward me, had handed our daughter over to his mother to raise. Our daughter lacked the love of both parents from a young age, so when this man who knew how to take care of people appeared, she couldn't help falling for him. In the end, it was because of the neglect from me and my ex-husband that today's situation came about. Seeing our daughter politely draw boundaries with me made me feel extremely guilty. If I had come back to see her more back then, I wouldn't have let her place her feelings on a man so much older than her.
