Most flowers are fragrant, such as osmanthus, gardenia, Aglaia odorata, jasmine, chamomile, dianthus and so on. These flowers are all very suitable for growing in the living room or on the balcony, and most of them have a comfortable fragrance. However, flowers all have a certain blooming season, and they are a bit more troublesome to care for. Today I mainly want to introduce some plants whose whole body is fragrant. Grow one pot and your home will smell wonderful all year round!

Cuban oregano

Cuban oregano is fleshy and fuzzy, and touching it feels a lot like petting a cat. After you touch it, your hand will also carry a scent similar to apples!

The reason Cuban oregano gives off fragrance is similar to the principle behind the mimosa's "shyness." When it is stimulated by outside touch, the water in its cells reacts, the turgor pressure of the pulvinus changes, and a volatile substance with an apple-like scent diffuses into the air through the stomata.

Normally, Cuban oregano also gives off a faint fragrance, but this scent is relatively light and not easy for people to notice. When its leaves are touched, the fragrance becomes stronger!

Care methods

Cuban oregano is very easy to grow, and loose soil with good drainage should be chosen. Cuban oregano likes sunlight, but it is also fairly tolerant of shade. Only under strong light will the fleshy leaves be thick and substantial; with insufficient light, the leaves will become flat and thin. It fears cold and cannot tolerate waterlogging. In winter it needs a temperature of 5°C-10°C. Cuban oregano branches very abundantly and grows along the horizontal plane, so the spacing between plants should be generous to allow the branches and leaves to spread out.

Propagating Cuban oregano is very easy. Cut off a branch and root it as a cutting, and it can take root in about 20 days.

Qingxiang wood

When the leaves of Qingxiang wood are picked or rubbed, there is a fresh scent resembling a mixture of Sichuan pepper and citrus. The leaves of Qingxiang wood are fine, dense and emerald green, the young leaves are red, and the branches are slender and quite lovely. Besides being ornamental, the wood of Qingxiang wood is also very good. The timber is hard and rot-resistant, and it can sink in water. It is purplish red with fine black growth rings, and after polishing its surface is glossy, making it very suitable for making bead bracelets, carvings, instrument handles and other crafts.

Care methods

Qingxiang wood likes light and can be sunned every day, but do not expose it to strong sun for long periods. Generally, it is enough to keep it in a place with scattered light. Do not water Qingxiang wood too frequently; once every 3-5 days is suitable. Each time you water, be sure to soak it thoroughly. If you water too much, the roots will rot. The soil must be loose, breathable and well-draining.

Perfume lemon

Does lemon also have a perfume scent? No, it is a variety of lemon. Perfume lemon fruit is slender, large and seedless, and the peel tastes fresh and sweet, completely lacking the bitterness of other lemons. It can be sliced directly and steeped in water. Because its juice is richly fragrant, it is called "perfume lemon."

Perfume lemon flowers and fruits continuously throughout the year, almost producing fruit all year round, so it is very suitable for home growing. However, if it is a seedling grown from a lemon seed (a seedling), it is not easy to get it to bear fruit; it takes 7-8 years, so it is best to buy a grafted seedling directly.

Besides perfume lemon, most plants in the citrus genus of the Rutaceae family have a fresh fragrance, such as calamondin, lemon trees and pomelo trees. Their leaves also have a special fragrance. Some people find it bitter, though others find it fresh and pleasant.

Care methods

Lemon likes warmth, tolerates shade, cannot tolerate cold, and also fears heat. The suitable annual average temperature for lemon is 17-19°C. It is suitable for planting in warm soil that is deep and well-draining. The most suitable soil pH for lemon is between 5.5-7.0. Lemon plants grow relatively quickly and have a fairly high fertilizer requirement, sending out new shoots, flowering and fruiting multiple times a year.

Lavender

Lavender is a richly fragrant small purple-blue flower, native to the Mediterranean region and belonging to the aromatic plants of the Lamiaceae family. Lavender's fragrance is rich, making people feel calm and soothed, and it has the effect of cleansing body and mind. Ancient Romans often used lavender for bathing and scenting, while the Greeks used lavender to treat coughs. It has long been known as the "queen of aromatic herbs."

Care methods

Lavender has a well-developed root system and likes deep, loose, well-aerated, fertile soil rich in silicon and calcium. Adult lavender plants tolerate both low and high temperatures and have strong adaptability. Lavender is a long-day plant, and during growth and development it requires sufficient sunlight. If the plant is in a damp, shady environment, it will develop poorly and age quickly. Lavender is a plant that likes dryness and does not need much water, and it must not be waterlogged.

Scented geranium

Scented geranium is a well-known mosquito-repellent plant. Scented geranium is widely popular because the plant has a volatile fragrance and can be used to make essential oil. Its main components include geraniol, citronellol, linalool and so on. Scented geranium has many scents, including rose, citrus, mint, coconut and nutmeg. The natural essential oil released by mosquito-repellent plant has a repellent effect on mosquitoes. The mosquito-repellent plant has relatively strong adaptability, is a perennial herbaceous plant, and can be grown indoors and outdoors. It gives off a rich lemon scent all year round and has the effect of repelling mosquitoes and purifying the air.

Care methods

Scented geranium likes warmth and tolerates drought, cannot tolerate cold, fears waterlogging, and has low water requirements. It is suitable for growing in neutral or slightly alkaline soil. The growth of scented geranium needs sufficient sunlight, and light can increase the plant's fragrance.

"Fragrant succulents"

Succulents are especially suitable for office plant lovers. Usually there is not much time, and they do not need much care. Placed on the office desk, they can also freshen and delight the mood. In fact, Cuban oregano is also a kind of succulent. Below are a few more succulents that naturally carry a fresh fragrance~

Blue bean

The succulent Blue bean is one of the rare fragrant succulents. Blue bean is a perennial herb, and the plant's leaf color is light blue.

Blue bean's scent smells sweet, with a faint fresh fragrance, though at night it is almost undetectable. Blue bean not only naturally carries a fresh scent but also looks very beautiful.

Blue bean likes a warm, dry environment with plenty of sunlight, tolerates drought, and avoids waterlogging.

Daruma Fukuniang

Daruma Fukuniang, also known as Maruba Fukuniang, belongs to the Crassulaceae family, genus Cotyledon. Its leaves are small and oval, pale green or tender yellow in color, covered with white powder, with protruding leaf tips that easily turn red.

Daruma Fukuniang has a faint sweet fragrance, and it belongs to the same genus as bear's paw.

Daruma Fukuniang does not need much sunlight and likes a cool, ventilated environment with sufficient sunlight. In summer when temperatures are high, pay attention to appropriate shading and heat avoidance; it cannot be exposed to strong sun.

Ice plum

Ice plum is a succulent in the Crassulaceae family, genus Echeveria. It has a sweet fragrance, similar to the fresh scent of vanilla ice cream.

Ice plum likes a sunny, cool environment, cannot tolerate cold, and if the light is not strong enough, it easily becomes leggy, with loose leaves, affecting its appearance.

Red frost and white frost

Red frost and white frost both belong to the Crassulaceae family, genus Sedum, and they both naturally carry fragrance. However, white frost's fragrance is more noticeable.

Both need a sunny, cool and dry environment, tolerate partial shade, fear waterlogging, and avoid muggy, humid conditions. They have the habit of growing in cool seasons and going dormant in summer heat. They are not strict about soil requirements; peat soil plus coarse sand to maintain drainage is enough.
