Recently, a fellow orchid grower asked me: besides too much water, what other reasons are there for orchid root rot? Many orchid growers believe that watering too much causes orchid root rot, but that is not actually the case. There are many situations that cause root rot; here are a few examples for reference:

One: The potting medium has too much base fertilizer.

Two: Fertilizing is usually too concentrated and too frequent.

Three: The orchid growing area is too humid and watering is too frequent.

Four: The orchid growing area is stuffy and hot, lacks ventilation, and watering does not soak through.

Five: Excessive water loss leads to hollow roots and root rot.

Six: When potting, diseased and rotten roots were not trimmed off, and the potting medium was not right.

If there is good ventilation, you can water every day, or even twice a day; if there is no ventilation, watering once a week can still cause rot. Another piece of experience: you can drill more holes in the bottom of the pot, which improves ventilation a lot. Fellow orchid growers, have you learned how to deal with orchid root rot?
