Desert Rose Pruning Methods and Techniques Explained

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
The best time to prune a Desert Rose is after the flowering period, when the plant's condition is relatively stable and it recovers easily. When pruning, first remove the terminal buds to prevent uneven nutrient distribution and rampant branch growth. Then remove the lateral buds so that nutrients are concentrated. Finally, remove the dead and diseased branches to avoid secondary infection.

I. Pruning Time

Pruning time is generally chosen after the flowering period, because once flowering is over, the plant's demand for nutrients is not as great as during the flowering period, and its condition has begun to stabilise. So this is the best time to observe the plant and determine which branches need pruning.

II. Pruning Methods

When pruning, first remove the terminal buds, so that nutrients do not become unbalanced: some branches keep growing rampantly while other branches end up short of nutrients. Therefore, removing the terminal buds is an essential step in pruning. Then remove the lateral buds; the purpose of removing lateral buds is to concentrate nutrients and prevent excess side branches from taking them away. Finally, remove the dead and diseased branches. If a Desert Rose branch shows signs of disease and cannot be treated, the diseased branch must be cut off promptly to prevent infection from affecting healthy branches.

III. Points to Note

It is best to prune with a sterilised small knife, so that the cut is smoother, which helps the plant recover. Do not water after pruning; wait until the cut has dried before watering, in order to avoid infection at the cut and harm to the plant's health. Do not expose the plant to sunlight after pruning, as this is too much of a shock to the cut. Wait until the cut has formed a scab before giving it sunlight, and the time in sunlight must not be the same as under normal growing conditions. Increase it gradually, a little more each day, until normal light levels are restored.
