How to Grow Desert Rose So It Blooms? A Full Guide to Care Techniques

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
To make a desert rose bloom, first ensure plenty of light, no less than eight hours a day; second, ensure sufficient nutrients, fertilizing twice a month during the flowering period; in addition, water appropriately, supplying water promptly once the soil dries out.

1. Light

It is a sun-loving plant and needs eight hours of natural sunlight every day to grow healthily, so it is best to grow it on a balcony or outdoors in a spot facing the sun to ensure it gets the amount of light it needs. In winter, when daylight is shorter, try to give the plant light as well; winter sunlight is not intense, so it can be placed on a balcony to receive all-day exposure.

2. Fertilizing

Normally the plant does not need fertilizing, except during the growing period and the flowering period, because at these times nutrient consumption is high and soil nutrients alone can hardly meet its needs. So make sure to fertilize twice a month, but because these two special periods have higher nutrient requirements, a compound fertilizer is needed, such as 0.2% monopotassium phosphate; this kind of fertilizer provides diverse nutrients and can meet the desert rose's needs in multiple ways.

3. Watering

The desert rose is a drought-tolerant plant, and many people think drought-tolerant plants do not need watering, but this idea is wrong; drought-tolerant plants do need watering too. The watering schedule for the desert rose is not fixed, but one thing matters: before each watering, first check how dry the soil is, and only water the plant when the soil is completely dry. Also, do not water too much, and absolutely never let water accumulate in the pot; water until the soil feels moist and does not clump. Standing water will cause its roots to rot, and this condition is very hard to recover from.
