How to Repot a Desert Rose? Detailed Method and Step-by-Step Guide
1. Choosing a Pot
The desert rose is a drought-tolerant plant, so the pot used to grow it must have good drainage and good air permeability, in order to avoid excess water accumulating after watering and causing root rot. The size of the pot should be chosen to be twice the size of the desert rose's root system, so that in the coming year its roots have room to grow and root development is not affected by crowding.
2. Repotting Time
The repotting time should be in spring, because the climate in spring is stable and the desert rose has only just begun to grow, so its ability to adapt to a new environment is relatively strong. If repotted too early, the plant has not yet started growing and root rot is likely; if too late, the plant is growing vigorously and a sudden repotting means the survival rate is not high. The repotting time should avoid summer, as summer temperatures are high and repotting then makes the roots prone to rotting, affecting survival.
3. Repotting Method
When repotting the plant, prepare the new pot and soil in advance; the soil should be acidic sandy soil with good air permeability and good drainage. When repotting, first take the plant out of its pot, keeping as much of the old soil around the roots as possible; be sure not to bare-root it, as bare-rooted plants are not easy to keep alive, while transplanting with soil gives a higher survival rate. After that, place it into a new pot containing some new soil, then use the remaining soil to fill it level and firm it down. After repotting, do not water the plant at first; put it in a shady place, and once it has adapted to the new environment, water it gradually, move it to a spot with light, and gradually restore the light.
4. Points to Note
Be careful when repotting and do not injure the roots, to prevent infection. If they are injured, promptly apply a fungicide to the wounds to disinfect and sterilize them. The interval between repottings must not be shorter than half a year; it is best to repot about once a year. Before repotting, stop watering the pot soil, and wait until the pot soil is completely dry before repotting.
