What is the difference between Amur lilac and common lilac?
1. Bark differences
Amur lilac is a deciduous small tree or large tree, with a height of 4-10 m, and can reach up to 15 m. The bark color is purplish-gray-brown. Common lilac, however, is a shrub or small tree, about 5 m tall, with grayish-brown or gray bark.
2. Leaf differences
Amur lilac leaves are broadly ovate, ovate to elliptic-ovate or oblong-lanceolate. The apex is shortly caudate-acuminate to caudate-acute, the base is oblong or cuneate, the upper surface is yellow-green, and the lower surface is pale yellow-green. Common lilac leaves are leathery or thickly papery, ovate to reniform, with a short convex and acute to long acute apex, a base that is cordate to nearly rounded, a dark green upper surface, and a pale green lower surface.
3. Flower differences
The Amur lilac corolla is white and rotate, with ovate lobes. The common lilac corolla is purple, with ovate, elliptic to obovate lobes.
4. Fruit differences
The Amur lilac fruit is long elliptic, with a smooth surface or fine lenticels. The fruiting period is August-October. The common lilac fruit is obovate-elliptic or ovate to long elliptic, with a very smooth surface. The fruiting period is June-October.
