Why Clematis Leaves Turn Black and How to Fix It

1. Causes of the leaves turning black

Several causes can lead to this phenomenon. It may be too much watering, causing root rot, and then the leaves turn black. It may also be too strong light, which scorches the leaves and causes them to turn black. Another cause is fertilizer that is too concentrated, leading to fertilizer burn and black leaves. Poor ventilation may also be the cause, with too much water remaining on the leaves without drying, leading to blackening. There are also diseases, such as "leaf blight", where the leaves dry up and look as if they have turned black.

2. Solutions

If the situation is not serious, then you can adjust the surrounding environment so that it is in a suitable environment, and the situation will ease. If the situation is serious, then you have to take it out of the pot. Follow these steps:

(1) First cut off most of the branches, especially the branches with black leaves; be sure to cut them off completely.

(2) After that, pull the whole plant out of the soil and shake off the excess soil from the roots. You can prune it appropriately, mainly cutting off the parts that have already rotted. However, be careful not to damage the healthy parts of the roots, otherwise it will easily die.

(3) Then prepare clean water and put the carbendazim solution into it. Immerse the roots in it. After about one hour, take it out and let it dry.

(4) Prepare new soil. Disinfect it with carbendazim in the same way. Water it lightly, and do not expose it to direct light. The leaves that grow afterward will not turn black.
