In 40°C heat, slip a pot around your flowers and the blooms grow bigger than a fist, still growing like crazy
Slip an outer pot on jasmine and rose, and the blooms are as big as a fist
Benefits of double-potting
Double-potting insulates and cools things down, extending the bloom period of jasmine and rose, and helping succulents get through summer more easily.
Double-potting method
1. Choose a pot two sizes larger than the original pot, and spread a layer of crushed stone on the bottom to improve airflow.
2. Place the potted jasmine/rose into the larger pot; the two pots should not touch directly, which provides the insulation.
3. Stuff soaked paper towels, sphagnum moss, shallow-rooted weeds, etc. between the two pots to make the insulation stronger and also retain moisture.
Slip an outer pot on pothos and spider plant, and they grow like crazy without watering
Benefits of double-potting
Slip an outer pot on pothos and add a cotton cord, and you have a self-watering setup: it insulates against heat and sun, and also wicks up water automatically, ideal for lazy gardeners.
Double-potting method
1. Find a longer cotton cord or cotton shoelace and thread it through the pot from top to bottom.
Note: thread it through near the pothos roots and out through the drainage hole.
2. Find a watertight pot to serve as the outer pot, sized so the original pot fits inside but does not touch the bottom. Put a layer of water in the outer pot, with the water level no higher than the bottom of the inner pot, then place the inner pot inside.
Note: the cotton cord must be long enough to reach exactly to the bottom of the water. Cotton cord has strong water absorption, so when the plant lacks water, it is carried through the cord into the potting soil, meaning even if you are away from home for a month, there is no problem.
The planting basket of hydroponic pothos can also serve as a self-watering device~
Slip an outer pot on water lilies, and no root burn, no rotten leaves
Benefits of double-potting
Growing water lilies with double-potting has so many benefits: repotting is convenient, less soil is used, the water stays clean, no root burn, no rotten leaves, no need to top up water often, and you can keep fish at the same time!
Double-potting method
1. Plant the tubers: plant the water lily tubers in a small pot, with the ratio of base fertilizer, soil and water as shown in the picture below:
2. Double-pot: find a large water tank, fill it with water, and place the small water lily pot inside. Note that the edge of the small pot must be more than 5cm from the water surface.
3. Once double-potted, you can keep a few fish in the outer pot, which is both attractive and keeps pests away!
