Introduction

Green plants and potted flowers are essential decorative touches for home life. Keeping some flowers and plants at home has many benefits: it beautifies the home and lifts your mood. "Flower Sound Potted Plant Diary · Issue 1211" introduces you to a flower that is most suitable for growing in summer.

Today's star

When we introduced other flowers in previous issues, flower lovers always left us comments asking, can this flower be grown in summer? Indeed, summer is hot with blazing heat, and people cannot stand it without air conditioning or a fan, let alone it being a season for growing flowers. So does that mean there are no suitable plants to cultivate in summer? There are. The flower introduced today, called large-flowered purslane, is very heat-tolerant and can be grown in summer too.

Large-flowered purslane

Large-flowered purslane - you may be a little unfamiliar with this name. This is its scientific name; it is actually what we commonly call "moss rose", and it is the name for large-flowered, double-petaled varieties. In some places it is also called "pine-leaf peony". Its flower shape is beautiful, its buds are plump, and its flower shape closely resembles a peony. It belongs to the purslane family and is essentially a succulent. It originated in Brazil and is now grown all over the world.

A miniature "peony"

Large-flowered purslane comes in rich and varied colors, with numerous horticultural varieties covering almost all mainstream colors - red, yellow, white, pink and more - and there are also many with variegated edges, which are even more beautiful. Its blooming period is also extremely long. Flower lovers who have grown it all know that once winter passes, this plant begins to bloom and can keep blooming until late autumn, for more than half a year. A single flush of flowers can last 20 days, so the ornamental period is very long.

Drop it into soil and it will live

Large-flowered purslane is the easiest flower to grow, with almost no rival. Among ordinary people it is also called "can't die". Whether by sowing seeds or taking cuttings from branches, it survives almost as soon as it is dropped into soil, and its vitality is astonishingly tenacious. It is extremely heat-tolerant and also drought-tolerant; it will still grow well without watering for ten days to half a month, and it is not afraid of scorching sun, able to withstand high temperatures above 37°C. It is even easier to grow than pothos and spider plant, and its reproductive capacity is extremely strong: one branch can fill a flowerpot in a year.

Choose it for growing flowers in summer

The shortcoming of large-flowered purslane is that it is not very cold-tolerant. In areas north of the Yangtze River in China, it may not survive the winter if grown outdoors, so flower lovers in the north should move it indoors in winter. In South China, it can be cultivated outdoors. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with persistent roots; plant it once and enjoy its flowers year after year. As the easiest plant to grow, with beautiful and brilliant colors, it is one of the most common potted flowers in Chinese households, has a great decorative effect, and is well worth having.
