Of course the answer is not necessarily! But many times we still give succulents a top dressing.

A top dressing can block the soil and make succulents more beautiful.

After watering, even by the next morning the surface of the potting soil cannot dry out. Exposing it directly to the sun can easily cause the soil to absorb heat and smother the roots, which is bad for the succulent's growth. With a top dressing, this situation can be avoided.

If the soil used for planting succulents is mixed with perlite, watering causes it to float on the surface of the potting soil, which looks ugly, and when the wind blows it goes everywhere. A top dressing can solve this problem.

It can speed up the release of moisture from the soil surface, which helps the soil alternate between drying and staying moist.

Some succulents are small and unstable, and a top dressing can play a fixing role.

It is tidy, and potting soil and dust will not accumulate on the surface of the potting soil.

So what should be noted when giving succulents a top dressing?

You can choose light-colored granules for the top dressing, such as diatomite, maifan stone, akadama, kanuma soil, and so on.

Using lightweight granules for the top dressing gives good breathability. White stones and some colored stones do not have good breathability.

You can also mix several kinds of granules for the top dressing, and the effect will be very good.

Both coarse sand and fine sand can be used for the top dressing. The reflected light created by countless grains of sand allows plants to receive invisible ultraviolet rays from multiple angles, including the backs of leaves that cannot be reached by the sun. With sufficient light, photosynthesis is strong, and combined with reasonable watering, the plants become plump.

Dark-colored granules are not suitable for top dressing.
