Petunia is a perennial herbaceous plant in the nightshade family, genus Petunia, and is often grown as an annual or biennial. It has a short, compact habit, dense flowers, and bright, richly varied colors, making it look exceptionally beautiful. Especially in summer, petunias reach their most vigorous blooming season. How can you grow them so they quickly fill the pot with flowers?

The blooming period of petunias

The blooming period of petunias is very long, generally flowering from May to November, from spring through autumn, and if winter temperatures are relatively high, they can bloom then too. Each petunia flower lasts a long time, blooming continuously, generally for 2 to 3 months in a row.

Introduction to the habits of petunias

Petunias like a warm growing environment with plenty of light. This plant is not tolerant of frost and fears waterlogging, and the most suitable growing temperature is between 13 and 18°C.

When the winter temperature is below 5°C, growth stagnation is likely to occur. Summer is the peak growing period for petunias, requiring sufficient water, especially in the high-temperature summer season, when they should be watered in the morning and evening to keep the potting soil moist. Only then can they grow better.

Tips for making petunias fill the pot in summer

Sufficient light

Petunias are long-day plants and like a growing environment with plenty of sunlight. To achieve the effect of a pot overflowing with flowers, keeping the light sufficient during care is very important. This is especially true when growth is fast; this stage is the key period for filling the pot. During this period, unless the light is especially intense, there is no need to shade them.

Reasonable watering

Petunias like dryness and fear dampness, but during the growing period they need sufficient water, especially in the high-temperature summer season when they need a large amount of water. You can water in the morning and evening to keep the potting soil moist, but do not let water accumulate in the pot; otherwise, long-term water accumulation in the pot will cause root rot and lead to plant death. Also, do not keep it too wet, otherwise the stems and leaves are prone to growing leggy.

Proper fertilizing

Petunias like fertilizer. When first planting them out, you need to spread some bone meal or a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer in the soil as a base fertilizer. During their growing period, apply a nitrogen fertilizer about once every ten days to promote the growth of branches and leaves.

Note that nitrogen fertilizer should no longer be applied during the bud and flowering stages. It is better to apply a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer about once every half month, and spray the leaves once a month with a 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution to encourage more buds.
