How to choose a suitable flower pot when planting succulents?

Flower pots usually include clay pots, porcelain pots, purple clay pots, plastic pots, wooden pots, and so on. The biggest advantage of clay pots is that they are breathable and cheap, but precisely because they are so breathable, some people say they are not suitable for growing succulents. The reason is that the soil along the rim of the pot dries out very easily. Especially under blazing sun exposure, the roots along the rim of the pot are easily damaged, and the rim of the pot has the most fibrous roots.
Although porcelain pots are beautiful, they are basically not breathable. However, if the soil structure is relatively good, porcelain pots can still be used perfectly well. But when using porcelain pots, pay attention to solving the breathability problem. Large pots should have ventilation holes,
For a medium-sized porcelain pot, cut off the upper half of a beverage bottle, use only the lower half, punch holes all over it, and place it upside down over the drainage hole. Be careful to punch holes in the sunken areas on the bottom surface of the beverage bottle, otherwise water will accumulate. For a small porcelain pot, use a slightly larger plastic bottle cap, punch holes all over it, and place it over the drainage hole. This is called a breathable cover.
Remember to cut notches at the rim in every case. Relative to the breathable area of the drainage hole, installing a breathable tube can effectively increase the breathable area by dozens of times. This is a very important measure for growing succulents and other flower varieties that are afraid of waterlogging, and everyone should not treat it lightly.
Purple clay pots are also quite beautiful, and their breathability falls between that of clay pots and porcelain pots. Generally, purple clay pots are often used for growing cacti and succulents. When buying purple clay pots, in addition to appearance and price, special attention should be paid to the thickness of the pot wall. The thinner the wall of the purple clay pot, the stronger the breathability; those with very thick walls have breathability similar to porcelain pots. Large purple clay pots should also adopt the same breathability measures as porcelain pots, which is relatively beneficial to plant growth. For small and medium pots, the method of placing a breathable cover is better.
The disadvantage of plastic pots is also poor breathability. In addition to using a breathable tube, the solution can also be to poke holes with a needle in the middle and lower part of the pot body. If you want it to look good, you can first draw a simple pattern on paper, then stick it on the flower pot, and poke holes densely along the pattern lines. It is both attractive and breathable. Do not poke holes in the upper part of the pot, as it easily leaks water.
Some people say that using wooden pots makes them prone to mildew and deterioration. I think it is not a big deal, because succulents generally need more sun, and watering will not make them too wet, so it should not be a problem.
Making your own flower pots is encouraged. Using things around you to make flower pots is very interesting. Using a beverage can to make a flower pot is very beautiful. There are also people who use colorful wall lamp shades to make flower pots, which is very unique. I have also seen someone use a ceramic cup as a flower pot, which is also very beautiful, but I do not know how to open a drainage hole, and it is very easy to break the cup.
The depth of the growing soil should be at most twice the diameter of the bulb. That is, if the bulb diameter is 5 cm, a soil depth of 10 cm is enough. For large bulbs, it can be even shallower. The larger the bulb, the less water and nutrients it consumes. Too much potting soil is not only useless but also easily leads to rot. If the flower pot is too deep, pay attention to adding more non-soil filler at the bottom.
The choice of flower pot is quite closely related to the preparation of the growing medium and to the environmental and climatic conditions. In the north, where the soil is sandy and the climate is dry, as long as you have some growing experience, it actually does not matter what kind of pot you use. But for friends in the humid southern regions who are not very experienced growers, you need to be careful!
