Freesia, with its delicate fragrance reminiscent of orchids and its elegant, dainty, and refined flowers, is a widely popular ornamental plant. So how do you grow freesia? As long as you meet its growing requirements, you can grow freesia well and enjoy continuous blooms. Below, we introduce the care methods for freesia!

How do you grow freesia?

(1). Pot and soil

For potted freesia, generally choose clay pots or similar containers with good breathability, which benefits plant growth and ensures a good growing environment for the plant. The soil should generally be loose, well-draining, and moisture-retentive sandy soil. You can mix 2 parts peat soil with 1 part fine sand to make a nutrient soil.

(2). Light

Freesia is a light-loving plant. Apart from providing appropriate shade in summer to avoid scorching sun, which otherwise easily causes yellowing leaves, it needs sufficient light in other seasons. You can appropriately adjust the flower pot so the plant receives even light, which helps the plant grow more attractively.

(3). Temperature

During the growth of freesia, the suitable temperature is 15-25°C. Generally, the temperature should be kept at around 20°C during the day and around 15°C at night, which ensures the plant blooms, and the flowers are large and vivid. In winter, the temperature should be kept above 7°C to avoid frost damage. In summer, the temperature should not exceed 30°C, which helps the plant get through summer safely.

(4). Watering

Watering freesia is essential. After potting, generally water once about every 7 days, and keep the soil moist before sprouting. During the growing period, the demand for water is high, so you need to increase watering, just keeping the potting soil moist, but not watering too much. After buds appear, you need to control watering, which is very important for blooming: keep the soil dry, lower air humidity, and reduce pests and diseases. When the flower stems are emerging, ensure an adequate water supply, which promotes blooming.

(5). Fertilizing

Fertilizing is very important for the growth of freesia. Since freesia loves fertilizer, you need to fertilize to meet the plant's nutrient needs. During flower bud differentiation, apply bean cake water or phosphorus-potassium fertilizer once every 10-15 days. Stop fertilizing when buds appear, otherwise it will only grow leaves and affect blooming. When blooming, apply monopotassium phosphate as a foliar feed, which helps blooming.
