No soil needed to propagate snake plant cuttings - just dry the leaves and toss them in water, and big white roots will sprout in 10 days

Snake plants are beautiful and easy to care for, no wonder so many plant lovers are showing theirs off. But they have one drawback: they propagate too slowly. You buy one and after growing it for years it still looks the same. Don't worry though - Huahua recently found a great method. Leaf cuttings will sprout white roots in half a month, and one pot instantly becomes 10 pots!
Water propagation for rooting, super fast!
Huahua previously taught everyone how to propagate snake plants with leaf cuttings, but many plant lovers reported that it was just too slow - half a year had passed and still nothing! Today let's try water propagation instead, it's several times faster!
1. Cut the leaves, dry the leaves
Pick relatively robust snake plant leaves, cut them into 10 cm long segments, and place them in a cool place to dry for 3-5 days.
Once you see the cut ends have somewhat closed up and are a bit wrinkled, they're ready. Don't worry, the snake plant isn't dead - drying stimulates root growth!
2. Mind the orientation, place in water
Since snake plant leaves are large, it's recommended to find a small pot or bucket without drainage holes, fill it with water 3-5 cm deep, and place the snake plant leaves against the edge of the pot. Be careful not to flip them upside down, or they won't be able to grow roots.
3. Water propagation care
Water-propagated snake plants can be placed indoors in a slightly bright spot. Change the water in the pot about every 4-5 days. The water used for changing is best if it's been left to sit out tap water, and you can also add some rooting powder to speed up root growth.
4. Half-month comparison
With water propagation you can observe the progress at any time, there are changes every day, and this kind of waiting is truly worth it!
5. Root establishment and added nutrients
After about 1 month of water propagation, you'll see dense big white roots! At this point the root system is stable, and you can add some aquarium water, vitamin B, aspirin tablets, etc. to the water to boost nutrients and promote root growth.
6. Pups burst out in 2 months
Snake plants are still a bit slow at sending out small shoots - with soil cultivation it's almost always more than half a year, but with water propagation 2 months is about enough.
7. Transfer to a flower pot for soil cultivation
Once the snake plant has produced pups, it can be planted into a flower pot. Sand soil : coco peat soil : garden soil = 1:1:2. Soil breathability is very important, and you can also put some expanded clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot for aeration.
8. Care after potting
After planting the snake plant cuttings, water thoroughly to settle them in, and first place them in a cool spot to avoid sunlight exposure. After 5-7 days, gradually move them to a spot with good light, and then normal care can resume.
9. Variety changes after propagation
What plant lovers often grow is the golden-edged snake plant, whose genes are not very stable. After propagation the golden edge will disappear - this is a normal phenomenon~
If your snake plant is still too slow to propagate from cuttings, it's very likely the leaves don't have enough nutrients. Thin leaves have few nutrients, and if you still want it to quickly grow roots and produce pups, you'd better fatten it up first!
Fattening up the snake plant
1. Add some organic "manure"
Hearing the word manure, can plant lovers smell it through the screen? What Huahua means is pure natural, odorless worm castings - take a walk outside more and you'll find them. Worm castings are mild and highly nutritious, very suitable for adding to snake plant pots~
2. Soybean residue fertilizer
After making soy milk, take the soybean residue, mix it with 4-5 times its volume of soil, bury it in a plastic bucket, seal it with a plastic bag, and leave it in a corner or on a terrace or outdoors to compost for 1 month. It then becomes nitrogen-rich nutrient soil. You can mix a handful into the snake plant's soil each month, guaranteeing wide and big leaves!
3. Soybean water
For plant lovers who find it inconvenient to compost soybean residue soil, try boiling soybeans in water. The process must not touch oil. Let the filtered soybean water cool, then dilute with water = 1:10 and water the snake plant once. The rest can be stored in a small bottle for next time. Once every half a month, effortless and convenient~
4. Good light, and needs ventilation
Experienced plant lovers all know that flowers like a ventilated environment - water in the pot evaporates quickly, root vitality is vigorous, and they naturally grow well. The snake plant, this slowpoke, also likes ventilated places. Hurry and move it to a bright, well-ventilated spot~
