For the sake of getting proper nutrition, we often buy walnuts to eat, since everyone wants to boost their brainpower and try to be a smart person. But in the past, after we finished eating the walnuts, we would just toss the shells away without a second thought. Actually, that is a waste of resources, because walnut shells themselves can do a great many things. Today, though, we will focus on the role they play in growing and caring for flowers. If the potted plants you are currently growing have problems with soil or fertilizer, then perhaps walnut shells can help. Let's take a look!

First, let's talk about soil problems. As a key part of plant growth, soil is often overlooked by gardening enthusiasts. When mixing potting soil, many people directly choose a special soil for a particular flower plus some base fertilizer. The growing medium made this way is guaranteed in terms of fertility, but its drainage and aeration are not ideal. To improve this, we add some large-grained sand and gravel, but getting hold of it is another problem. So we can absolutely use walnut shells instead. After all, their hardness is still guaranteed, and they can also be slowly absorbed in the soil, so by the time we repot, they won't cause us too much trouble.

However, note here that before putting walnut shells into the soil, it is best to crush them with a tool into pieces about the size of a fingernail, and these pieces should go through two steps: soaking in water and baking in the sun. The purpose is to eliminate as much as possible the bacteria and other harmful substances remaining in them, and to avoid cross-infection of the plants.

Besides being added to soil as a hard growing medium, walnut shells can also be applied to plants as fertilizer, a use quite similar to peanut shells. So you can use them with confidence. Of course, because walnut shells are much harder than peanut shells, we need a few more steps in processing. If you want to compost them into flower fertilizer, you can boil them in water, then dry them out and crush them. Then put the resulting crushed walnut shells together with other materials into a dark plastic bag and leave it in the sun. Especially now, when it is summer and the temperature is high, the effect is even better combined with the principle of dark colors absorbing heat.

And if you think this takes too long, you can also mix crushed peanut shells directly with pine bark and steam them in a pressure cooker. This is much faster. After the flower fertilizer is made, it is best to apply it by watering: dilute it with water and evenly pour it on the surface of the potting soil. Only in this way can you ensure sufficient fertility without putting extra burden on the flower's leaves.
